"We had Anula Karunatilleke, who, at that time, had played a few roles. She was also in Ran Salu (1967). That is why I took her as the school girl. I think all the expectations of those who had read the book were realised by her superb playing of the character. In the case of the boy there was a controversy that he was not really the romantic type. But that would have distracted from the poignancy of the relationship if we took a very handsome young man. I chose Wickrema Bogoda who came from the Martin Wickremasinghe trilogy. He was a pleasant looking, average school boy playing the wounded young man. The very fact of his ‘ordinariness’ added a lot to what I would call ‘fidelity’ to that kind of relationship. Remembering Sumitra Peries And Her Enduring Contribution To Women’s Filmmaking In South Asia Unlike South Asian women filmmakers from her time, including Fatma Begum, Parveen Rizvi, Shamin Ara, and Kohinoor Akhter, Sumitra Peries did not come to the director’s chair as an actress. In that sense, with her education in the West and her editing skills, she was a definitive precursor to the l...

Sydney Schanberg - the New York Times reporter whose association with the Cambodian photographer Dith Pran formed the basis of "The Killing Fields" (1984) - saw Lester James Peries's films and wrote on them on September 7, 1970. Schanberg also quotes Ray on Peries correctly: he didn't call Peries his "closest friend East of the Suez", he called him his "only relation east of Suez."

Sumitra, Lester and our French connection Apart from our love for the moving image, the special bond that Sumitra Peries and I shared was France. Centre-stage in this very private equation was the great Lester James Peries. Although clearly a generation apart, the French language and culture was the glue that bonded us since I first met the...
