Hair Loss - A Direct Result of Stress | Holpura | Plant-based Haircare & Skincare 30/03/2022

In our latest blog post, I talked about hair loss as a result of stress. Many of us suffer from hair loss or have suffered in the past, I am no stranger to that.

As we move into more stressful times, whether personal or on a more global scale, it is good to be mindful of the effects that stress can have on our hair and our overall wellbeing and find ways to reduce or alleviate that stress.

Hair Loss - A Direct Result of Stress | Holpura | Plant-based Haircare & Skincare When we experience high levels of stress, our hair doesn’t grow as fast or shed more than normal. This is because stress directly affects hair loss.

I love winter, it's a great time of year for togetherness, snuggling and gifts!

But..

It's not so great for our hair curly hair.

The shock of the extreme temperature change puts additional stress on the hair.

The colder, dryer air sucks all the moisture out of our hair, leaving it dry and parched.

All this dryness accelerates frizz, breakage, and split
ends.

Here are some simple actions you can take to protect your hair this winter:

- Make use of protective styles - keep your ends tucked away
and protected

- Boost your plant based nutrients and feed your hair from inside out with a healthy balanced diet.

- Drink alot of water - hydrated body = hydrated hair

- Deep condition your hair to fortify your strands

- Use an anti-humectant to seal in moisture.

There are several benefits of using a silk pillowcase according to scientific research.

Silk pillowcases can help prevent fine lines and wrinkles, inflammation and even breakouts on the skin.

You see, they harbour less bacteria than your regular cotton pillowcase.
They absorb less moisture from the skin, reduces friction against your skin and hair and is super gentle on those that are more sensitive.

Don't forget to share, your friends who may need this!

I know it's tempting.

When those curls are popping.

But don't. Literally, don’t touch your hair.

The more you touch it, the more the curl definition is disrupted.
Result = Frizz!

Once you’ve conditioned and styled your curls to your liking, let it be.

Don’t rake your fingers through it, don’t shake it out, and don’t you dare brush it.

Can't say i didn't warn you.

What if we were to tell you that the key to amazing curls
doesn’t just lie in mandatory monthly trims or hair supplements, and has a lot more to do with your comb and hairbrush?

Believe it or not, choosing the right comb and hairbrush can work wonders on your hair.

A great comb or brush is the difference between a frizzy mess and curl definition.

Think of that gorgeous wave pattern when you do a sleek bun with the right brush💖

Choose hairbrushes which have flexible bristles that are
dense enough to comb through all the hair but are spread out enough to avoid damage.

Wide tooth combs with no sharp ridges are your friend.

What is your favourite hair brush?

Let’s be honest.

Natural hair isn’t always a walk in the park when it comes to caring for it.

Sometimes it’s time-consuming and you wish it was someone else's problem.

On days like this.

Remember.

Less is more.

Rock that afro or that loose pineapple.

It's cute!

Are you struggling with dryness on your hair journey? Dry hair is frustrating, and often leads to hair breakage.

There are several reasons you might experience excessively dry hair. So if you're struggling, it might be time to look at your haircare routine and make a few changes.

Here are a few reasons why your hair may be dry:

1. You’re not washing it regularly enough.

2. You’re using too much heat.

3. You’re not applying your products correctly.

4. You’re not topping up your moisture.

5. You’re not using protective styles enough.

Now think of your haircare routine and look at what changes you may need to make to get your hair back to health.

Sometimes it takes only a few small changes to make your hair look amazing every day.

Hands up if your hair has stopped you from working out? 🖐

As a physically active curly haired woman, you may come up against some challenges when it comes to working out… because, well, sweat.

No one wants to walk around with funky hair, so here are a few tips to keep your hair smelling fresh:

1. Wear hairstyles that give your scalp plenty of air. Simple cornrows will do the trick

2. Wash your hair at least 2x a week with either water, a vinegar/tea rinse or co-wash – wash away sweat, keep your moisture

3. If you’re wearing extensions, they may cause you to sweat more so if you’re very active, choose extensions that can be washed. Focus on your scalp when washing

4. Drink plenty of water, it will cool your body so less
heat escapes through your head = less sweaty scalp. Plus, beautiful skin… hello!

Don't Let Your Hair Stop Your Sweat.

The skin gets drier during the winter season so stocking up on your body butters, thick creams and caring lip balms will do your body good.

What one skincare item can't you do without during the winter season?

3 amazing oils for thin hair - hempseed oil, macadamia nut oil, grapeseed oil
These oils are extra light so won't weight thin hair down, they also absorb pretty quickly and leave a very light protective film on the hair.

They offer moisture protection whilst fortifying the hair strands.

Do you have thin hair? What are some of your favourite oils?

Oil is absolutely necessary for most people's hair and skin. However, every Oil has unique characteristics and will shine in certain areas but not in others.

Take coconut oil for instance, most of us with Afro Curly hair find it drying, but that's exactly what coconut oil is supposed to do. You see, it has astringent properties with its high lauric acid content, which cleanses and kills bacteria. So whilst it's amazing for hair, it is best used in small doses and washed off.

When choosing an oil or a blend of oils, do your research to work out if it will do what you want it to. I would advise using organic oils if you can but its not always necessary. What is absolutely necessary is that you get your oil from a reputable supplier. Most hair supply stores do not stock high quality oils, try health food stores instead.

What are your thoughts on using oil in your hair?
