To celebrate #StarWarsDay, here are my Four Rules of Admission for May the Fourth. If you follow these and allow them to kind of become your mantra, then you’ll be golden when it comes to your admissions experience. Well, you know … not golden because that would be impossible -- I’m no King Midas, but you’ll be ready to ride the waves of your admissions journey, no matter what it brings you. 

1. ❓ASK QUESTIONS. Ask yourself lots of questions about what you want for your college experience as you prepare your list. Ask yourself questions about who you are and what’s important to you as you begin your essays. Ask your parents about finances. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, ask for help. And, don’t forget to ask about the process. While Google should be your friend, don’t be afraid to ask admissions offices, admissions counselors, and your school counselor when you need help.


2. 🧚‍♂️ KNOW THERE IS NO MAGIC FAIRY DUST. If I could wave a magic wand and make your admission happen, I would, but it’s not that easy -- especially for the most rejective colleges. Certain ECS, stellar STATS, or killer essays will not be the magic dust that gets you in. The hard truth is that your app has to unequivocally, authentically reflect you -- who you are and what you care about. In a sense, I guess, YOU are the fairy dust.


3. 🧠 BE OPEN-MINDED. Have an open mind and be curious --  about your list most of all. Create a well-rounded list with some Sure Bet Safeties (more on that in posts to come). And remember that sometimes the best financial option comes from merit aid. So be sure to open your mind to the many amazing colleges eager to offer you merit scholarships!


4. 💫 HOLD SPACE. Hold space for the discomfort as you become comfortable with the uncertainties of college admissions. Hold space for others who might also be feeling stressed out. Allow yourself to be a questioner AND a listener as you listen to your gut, your heart, your intelle
