Calvo, Perez turn from rivals to teammates in Columbian Dyip

The last time that CJ Perez and JP Calvo shared a court, it was in the Final 4 of the NCAA Season 94 men's basketball tournament.

Perez and the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates were crushing Calvo and the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights. To make matters worse, Calvo had to leave the game early in the third quarter after sustaining an injury. Without their backcourt general, the Knights lost, 109-95.

All that is now in the past, however, as Perez and Calvo prepare to team for Columbian Dyip in the PBA. The franchise made Perez their cornerstone, taking him with the first pick of the 2018 Rookie Draft. Calvo, meanwhile, was their surprise pick at No. 11.

Corpuz, McCarthy sign new deals as Columbian keeps young core intact

COLUMBIAN Dyip may not have won a lot of games in the PBA this year, but that didn’t stop management from bringing back the core of the team for next season.

Rashawn McCarthy and Jackson Corpuz were two of the Dyip’s stalwarts who were given new deals by the franchise, with hopes of teaming them up with the promising CJ Perez, the player Columbian is eyeing to tap as the no. 1 overall pick in Sunday’s annual rookie draft at the Robinson’s Place in Manila.

McCarthy, acquired as part of the controversial trade with San Miguel Beer last year for the rights on top rookie selection Christian Standhardinger, signed a two-year contract, while Corpuz, who was left out during the 2014 draft, received his richest contract as a pro after being locked up for the next three years.

Veterans JayR Reyes and Ronald Tubid, part of the Standhardinger package together with McCarthy, will also be back in a Columbian uniform as both were given one-year extension by management.

Young bigs Russel Escoto and Andreas Cahilig meanwhile, were signed for separate deals. Escoto inked a two-year pact, while Cahilig agreed to a one-year contract.

The Dyip failed to make the playoffs of the three conferences this season, which saw the team play under three different coaches, from Chris Gavina, Ricky Dandan, to current mentor Johnedel Cardel.

The team registered a 6-27 (win-loss) record this season, its best finish coming in the mid-season Commissioner’s Cup when it recorded a 4-7 card for ninth place.

It finished dead last at 12th place in both the Philippine and Governors Cups with similar 1-10 records.

Despite its woeful showing, there were bright spots too, in Columbian Dyip’s campaign, among them were the explosive backcourt tandem established by McCarthy and fellow Fil-Am Jerramy King and the emergence of Corpuz as one of the league’s promising wingman.

CJ Perez ready to turn Columbian’s fortune around

Sunday afternoon, Perez, a 25-year-old swingman out of Bautista, Pangasinan, was given the distinct honor of being the top overall pick in the 2018 PBA Draft. And he embraces the pressure that comes with it.

Another stinker for the Columbian Dyip

IT is the same story as always for the hapless Columbian Dyip, as they found themselves once again stumbling down throughout this year’s edition of the PBA Governors’ Cup.

Posting only one win in eleven tries, the PBA’s resident cellar-dwellers were eliminated right away from playoff contention – showing signs of the team having nowhere to go as usual.

Today, FOX Sports PH takes a look on the Dyip and how they’ve fared overall in this year’s iteration of the Governors’ Cup.

CONFERENCE STATISTICS

The floundering Dyip finished dead last in categories such as assists (19.8), blocks (3.1), defensive rebounds (31.7), and steals per game (7.7), while being second to the last in free throw percentage (61%) —indicating their inability to make the most out of their freebies from the charity stripe while not playing well overall as a team on both ends of the floor. Surprisingly, Columbian is second overall in fastbreak points per game (16.7), as head coach John Edel Cardel is probably making the most of their young lineup since they’re having a much harder time generating offense on half court sets.

In all of their losses this conference, Columbian has allowed a whopping average of 115 points per game for their opponents. Save for their 16-point blowout against the undermanned Rain or Shine Elastopainters in which they held them to only 84 points, the Dyip’s average losing margin is by -12.7 points per game.

NOTABLE PLAYERS

The versatility of reinforcement Akeem Wright was in full display this conference — posting norms of 22.6 points, 11.9 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 1.4 steals, and one block per game. Unfortunately for the squad, he alone couldn’t tow the Dyip all the way to its second postseason appearance given the lack of support from most of his teammates.

As for the locals, the trio of Jerramy King, Rashawn McCarthy, and Jackson Corpuz were the only ones who were able to tally double-digit scoring averages of 20.2, 13.6, and 11.2, respectively. The team could’ve maximized their young guns in Escoto, Cahilig, and Lastimosa but it’s unfortunate that they weren’t able to do so — at least for this conference.

Looking forward, what can we expect from Columbian?

There’s not much to expect from the constantly struggling Dyip, especially given their lackluster showings and questionable decisions over the years. But with the team being almost guaranteed to have the upcoming PBA draft’s top overall pick, the management could use this as another chance to form a competitive PBA squad once and for all.

However, despite their adamant stance in not to trade this year’s pick unlike last season, it remains to be seen if the veracity of their words will stand true come December. As fans, let’s just hope that this time, the pick won’t go to an SMC or an MVP team via a questionable trade.
