What is the current state of the electricity market in Australia? β‘
The electricity market in Australia has been going through some changes lately.
With the rise of renewable energy and the push towards decarbonisation, the market has become increasingly complex. However, there have been small steps at have had a significant impact on the market such as:
π± The closure of several coal-fired power plants
βοΈ The implementation of government policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions
At present, the majority of Australia's electricity generation comes from:
π Coal
π Natural Gas
π Wind
π Solar
However, the share of renewable energy in the market has been steadily increasing over the years, with wind and solar power being the fastest-growing sources of electricity generation.

The Australian Government recently reached a deal with the Australian Greens to enhance the Safeguard Mechanism, which covers emissions from the energy industry.
While this has been met with mixed reactions, we wanted to highlight what these changes could mean for the future. π±
π Enhancements will decrease net emissions from covered facilities from 143 MtCO2-e to around 100 MtCO2-e in 2030.
π The agreement includes the Greens' proposal for a hard cap on absolute emissions, with a requirement for a 5-year rolling average gross emissions from covered facilities to decline over time.
π The agreement also sets a limit on net emissions from 2021-22 to 2029-30 of 1,233 MtCO2-e.
π Net emission targets have been established for 2030 and 2050.
While News Corp media has claimed the deal will strike a hammer blow to the Australian coal and gas industries many companies have shown their support.
