Something a little different & rather unique. A vintage wall hanging, a wool tapestry of five patterned fish hung from a bamboo rod. It’s comparable in design to Evelyn Ackerman’s midcentury 1960s tapestries – her fish wall hanging is tantalisingly similar – but our hunch is it’s most probably South American in origin. It’s an eye-catching piece, expertly woven with vivid blues, browns, mustards & burnt orange wools. Free UK delivery on this one.

A quartet of midcentury table nests... Handy little things that tuck tidily against a wall or sofa end, ready to be deployed when it's TV dinner time or for drinks & snacks when pals visit. Free UK delivery on these apart from the biggie, top left, unless you're nearby in which case we'll drop round for free!

Extending coffee tables are weird & wonderful things. But why have one? After all, they're not like a dining table where extra room for dinner guests is handy. But if you think of them in the context of their midcentury time, they were really very useful, especially for sociable households where living rooms were busy spaces for communing & entertaining. We have a fine 1960s Danish example from Trioh with leaves that slide out from either end to give you a table of over 1.8M in length. Just think of all the coffee & cake you could load on there! I'm surprised one hasn't appeared on Gogglebox yet. Also excellent for boardgames. On the website.

Hailing from Denmark & designed by Erhardsen & Anderson / Eran Mobler, this 1970s 'Siesta' swivel chair is about as indulgent as a seat gets. It combines the perfect tilt (swipe to see what we mean), enveloping comfort & tall back support, all finished in chestnut brown leather. Added to the website today, could be in your home by the weekend!

Ercol, right? No, it's not as it happens, although you'd be forgiven for thinking so. It's a skillfully crafted, midcentury rocking chair. We love the exaggerated U of the arms which the back spindles pierce. On the website now.

Here's a head scratcher for you... A skillfully crafted table top cabinet with locking doors. Open the two top doors to reveal four removable drawers with brass handles. And within each red felt lined drawer is a further felt-lined removable tray.
What was it made for? Is it a sewing box? Made to house jewellery or watches? Is it a collector’s cabinet, custom-made for stowing treasures & specimens?
On the website now.

A blast from the past... Chippy Heath's 1960s telephone seat. From the days when homes had just the one dial up landline usually stationed in the hallway so zero privacy! Although those days are long gone, this neat, little bench is a sweetie. On the website.

Some absolute corkers coming up this week, starting with this smart, ex-military mahogany chest of drawers, stamped '1955' on the back. With a richly striped grain across its surfaces, one of the top drawers locks, perfect for hiding away your secrets & classified papers. On the website now.

An early version of Ercol’s serving cabinet, this Model 430 pre-dates the more common Model 469 which continued into the nineties. In production for just four years, this piece dates to 1958-1962 & it’s notable because of its flat front. The later 469 was updated with a convex profile.  Looking at the Ercol archives, they were intended for the dining room or kitchen. Nowadays, they can be used as bureaus, drinks cabinets or more. It’s a versatile piece giving a lot of storage & its neutral design means it could be used in any room. History lesson over, on the website now.

This week's 'Can I Keep It?' award went to this 19th century mahogany secretaire chest. So much more than a chest of drawers, pull out & fold down the top drawer to reveal a desk with further drawers & pigeon holes inside. This grand, old piece comes a little scarred by its considerable life but we love it all the more for that.

Mighty Ladderax... This 1960s two bay set-up comes with the much sought after white ladder uprights, along with loads of shelves, a record cabinet & a bar. It brings the party. It's in fantastic order inside & out. No fixing to the wall required. These are very clever modular systems offering a great deal of versatility. Find photos & details on the website.

Dining tables... OK, maybe not the sexiest grid pics but not to be under-valued, the dining table is a core furniture item for the home, a staple piece, right up there with the sofa & the bed. It is after all that important spot where everyone communes. This week, we've added a cracking S Form oval table to the mix at a great price. Made by Sutcliffe of Todmorden, it extends with ease to accommodate 8+ diners. We've also fine examples from Ercol, G Plan & McIntosh, the best of British.

Stayed up a bit too late last night on the jelly beans & juice watching the election results unfold, so tonight crashing on the couch & immediately nodding off. My inspo? This fine example of a slouchy, loungy Scandinavian sofa that went on the website today. It looked so inviting.

Designed by Robert Heritage for Brit maker, Beaver & Tapley, the 1960's Multi-width range was described as modular furniture. Modular in the sense that the individual pieces functioned separately but were coordinated & cohesive in a room with key universal features linking them like the feet.
We're keeping these two together, for sale as a pair. Check out the record cabinet with its pull-out vinyl holders! On the website now.

One of our favourite recent acquisitions, this trio of side tables is unusual & beguiling. Very distinctive by design & build, it's been surprisingly tricky to definitively attribute. We've settled on Peter Hayward for Vanson. There are clues in the edges & inner angles of the legs. The tables feature a walnut veneer top on bevelled ply with a blond beech base & splayed legs. Aren't they superb?

Hands up if you're one of the 20 people NOT at Glastonbury this weekend? 🤚🙄
The other half of OHW is there so I'm flying solo but it's been a super productive week. Lots to lust after from Bramin to Ercol to ES Horn to Leslie Dandy. But it's the trio set of plank side tables that has stolen my heart. It's this week's 'please can I keep it?' piece but it's a firm 'no' from Somerset. This & more, much more, at originalhomewares.com.

The Model 382 'plank' table from Ercol's Windsor range. The soft edges of the elm table top with the sharply angled beech legs are the signature features. Beautiful simplicity & understated elegance. On the website now.

It's not often we have a trio of chairs - they tend to come in pairs / fours / sixes - but here are three of Ercol's ever-popular Quaker dining chairs. Model 365 with the tall, arched back & five spindles. Made with solid English elm seats, they're built to last. On the website now.

These egg chairs never stick around for long so sharing this beauty with you pronto. Designed by HW Klein for Danish brand, Bramin, they're about as loungy & slouchy as you can get. A soft, floppy oversized leather cushion sits on the curved swivel frame. It's lot of fun & will have everyone fighting over it. On the website now.

Cracking set of Ercol 449s in this week in super, original condition. One of the most sought after models in our experience & a set of six is a find.

A super Globe Wernicke bookcase added to the website this week. These modular, stacking bookcases were designed for prestigious businesses, institutions & libraries, & featured their patented, retracting glass doors. Slimline, mahogany & with bags of history & old fashioned character, unusually this model comes with a lower cupboard.

Two very different vintage Danish sofas for you... One from the 1970s / early 1980s, one from the 1950s. We ❤️ them both.

16/06/2024

I know it's not cricket to mention the 'work' word at the weekend, but a quick spotlight on this 1950s oak bureau because it's rather brilliant. With a glass front bookcase, lower cupboard & a desk with further storage, it's offer a great deal. Neutral, neat & nicely proportioned, it's a smart home office in one.
Now back to your lazy Sunday. As you were.

Three vintage bureaus... All British, all midcentury, all different. Which is your favourite? Feeling charmed by the 1950s oak one on the right, ourselves.

This Art Deco console is an understated beauty. We love the brass feet caps, the cutaway, striped trim on each side & the long, elegant legs... But it's that brass drawer handle that's the star. Fresh stock on the website, folks.
