Visiting Bonaire and need to grocery shop? Wondering which supermarkets have the lowest prices?
Consumer advocate organizations Unkobon and FTpKB publish a monthly comparison of prices of 60 products in local supermarkets commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. For the month of Sept. 2018, 14 supermarkets were included in the price comparator. BonDiGro, traditionally one of the cheapest supermarkets on Bonaire, has objections to the comparison method used and chose not to participate for the month. In August they were the second less expensive behind Warehouse.
And the winner is....Warehouse Bonaire followed by Karibe Nobo Supermarket.
Happy shopping!
Every Tuesday morning STCB (Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire) goes to Sorobon to clean and repair the seagrass lines. Without these seagrasses, Lac will not be clean and clear, so to protect them form water sports activities, STCB has created floating barriers. Every week the lines need to be cleaned and repaired to continue to protect the seagrass beds and keep Lac Bai beautiful.

The Bonaire Flag:
The flag contains the colors red-white –blue representing our respect for the Dutch Kingdom’s tricolor.
At the upper end of our flag we have a yellow triangle, which is the bright light for our sun and also the beauty of our nature. Most Bonairean flowers are yellow like Kibrahacha, Kelki hel,Brasilia Hobada, Cucu, Sente-bibu, Anglo, Watapana and many others. The blue triangle is the color of our beautiful sea. Seen as a gigantic wave or a high mountain that we have to climb to reach the top for the progress of our nation.
The white symbolizes peace, liberty and tranquility. In the white area there is a black ring with four points of the navigation-compass. That compass is what our indisputable navigators have used to travel all over the world.
In the ring there is a six-pointed red star. The color symbolizes blood, as the fighting and surviving spirit of the six traditional regions which form together the people of Bonaire.
Fun lighthouse fact: Malmok Lighthouse was built in 1906. Malmok’s lighthouse was never lit, as it quickly became apparent that due to its unfavorable location too close to the sea, waves would damage the buildings.
The Flamingo, protected on Bonaire, is the island’s signature bird. Bonaire is one of the only Flamingo breeding sites in the Southern Caribbean. The Flamingo Reserve, nestled among the salt pans on Bonaire’s southern tip, is a special breeding ground for the birds. Admittance is prohibited to the reserve as flamingos are very sensitive to disturbances, but often time flamingos can be seen from the road. Additionally, flamingos may be spotted at Goto Lake, Slagbaai, Playa Funchi and other saltpans.
A few Flamingo facts: Caribbean flamingos have the brightest coloration and are pink because of a diet rich in alpha and beta carotenoid pigments found in algae and insects. Flamingos mainly lay one egg, and chicks are grey and white. In order to fly, flamingos have to get a running start!
