First 6 weeks of Sing Out loud!
Well, the first 6 weeks of Sing Out Loud Children’s Singing groups has happened. We have played focus games to help, well our focus.. we have sang rounds, tongue twisters and lots of breathing! Both groups have 2 songs under their belts with more on the way, and are starting to gel as a unit.
Learning to sing in a group is harder than it might seem. Developing an ear to hear what others are doing alongside what you need to do, whether that be the same line as others or a different harmonic line. Growing self confidence to sing out louder or learning to blend and not be the solo voice. All skills that can be improved. Particularly learning to not shout when singing with greater volume!
The importance of aiming the skills at the individual age of the singer is key to build these skills. Younger children are starting to learn they can control their voices, some may have a more natural ability in this than others but by developing their ‘ear’ to listen to what they are doing is a start. Teaching focusing on a task and to work individually on their own voice but more importantly to sing as part of a choir.
Watching the faces of the older group when they hit the harmony line by themselves, where they had doubted they could, was priceless. Seeing them tired from concentration but so pleased with what they had achieved.
