THE SCARECROW
I've always been a country girl. I grew up in a small town that was famous for its wheat production.
When I was ten, my parents made us move to the big city. To say I hated it was an understatement, but after a few years I grew use to the stench of smoke and hustle and bustle of city living.
After my parents death, I made the decision to leave the city, opting to return to my country roots. I packed my car, loaded up my dog, and started on the four day journey, returning to the country town that I had grown up in.
I didn't have a plan once I arrived. It wasn't like I had a house ready to move into. Walking my Labrador down the main street, I stopped in at the local real estate agent. One of the farms on the outside of town was up for sale at a reasonable price. The house was a little run down, but it wasn't completely dilapidated.
According to the estate agent, the owner, an elderly man, had already moved to another town that accommodated a retirement village, and was looking for a quick sale.
I negotiated a price, signed on the dotted line, and left the office being a home owner for the first time in my life.
It was a week before the estate agent had filed the paperwork and I received the key.
I arrived at the farm a little before dusk. Opening the car door, my Labrador sprinted past me, his nose to the ground as he sniffed his new surroundings.
I glanced around, admiring the land. It was peaceful and the view was something out of a movie. All except for that creepy scarecrow standing in the wheat field.
I squinted, shielding my eyes from the setting sun. The scarecrow loomed in the distance, menacing as the gentle breeze swirled around it.
As a chill shot up my spine, I started towards the house, my dog in tow.
The house was livable, mostly dated. I planned on spending the next few months taking on the renovations myself. But for the initial night, I didn't care.
I laid out a mattress on the floor of the bedroom and heated a frozen pizza over a wood fire for dinner.
I yawned. It was getting late. Feeling a bit stiff and sore from moving boxes all day, I decided to run a bath. I turned the taps, letting the clawfoot tub fill.
I unzipped my jeans, letting them fall to the floor of the bathroom. I removed my shirt, tossing it aside before discarding my bra and panties. I grabbed a clip and pinned my hair into a messy updo.
Bracing myself for the steaming temperature, I slid into the bath, submerging my body beneath the glassy surface.
From the tub, I could see out the bathroom window. The scarecrow in the field was in my line of vision. There was something unsettling about it.
I climbed out of the bath, dried off, and climbed into bed. My Labrador climbed in next to me. I managed to drift off to sleep, but my mind kept filtering back to the scarecrow in the field.
The next morning, I woke up and busied myself unpacking boxes. By lunch time, I had finished unpacking my bedroom as well as the kitchen.
I made a sandwich and wandered out onto the front porch. From its place in the field, the scarecrow taunted me. I stared at it intently as I devoured my lunch.
Curiosity got the better of me and before I knew what I was doing, I was making my way across the field.
My sneakers squelched in the muddy rows in the wheat field. As I got closer, the stench of death was overpowering.
Gagging, I covered my mouth as I approached the scarecrow.
The wind blew, causing the tattered clothing to sway with the breeze. From two feet away, my eyes grew wide.
Instead of seeing a burlap sack filled to the brim with hay, I saw the rotted flesh of the former farm owner...
Buy land in secret. Build the house in secret. Then do the house warming party with publicity.
Date in secret. Propose in private. Then marry in front of a crowd.
Let your haters only see your reality, never your vision, or you will have division.
In a game of chess, you don't speak. You just act. The only time that you ever speak when playing chess is to say checkmate.
Life is like chess. Don't broadcast your intentions. Act quietly. Keep achieving. Your achievements are your checkmate.
"You may not notice it, but I try hard every day, not to give up. I fight to keep my head up, to keep my heart beating, to keep my soul from crumbling. I push through the pain, the fear, the doubt, and the shame. I struggle to find the strength to face another day, another hour, another minute.
You may not see the tears I cry, the sleepless nights I endure, the battles I fight within myself. You may not hear the voices of self-doubt, the whispers of "you're not enough," the screams of frustration. But I hear them, I feel them, I live them.
Yet, despite all this, I try. I try to rise above, to find the light in the darkness, to hold on to hope. I try to remember that I am strong, that I am capable, that I am worthy. I try to believe in myself, even when no one else does.
You may not notice it, but I am fighting a war within myself every day. A war to stay alive, to stay sane, to stay me. And even if you don't see it, even if you don't understand it, know that I am trying. I am trying hard every day, not to give up."
