Mills is in!

The three Speedcar competitors in Lee Redmond, Travis Mills and Andy Pearce who make up the Pro Speedcar Group have always had intentions of fielding a car each for the upcoming PSW, and it is on that note today that we announce the final one of those three, with youngster Caleb Mills driving for father Travis in the PSW!

It was always the dream for a two-car team in the Mills camp, with Caleb first starting racing Junior Quarter Midgets at the age of nine (at Bacchus Marsh) before he was able to step into Speedcars some years later:

“My pop Pearce and my cousin's pop Fly Lewis bought a Quarter Midget for us to start with” he explains. “Then they built a custom car for me, complete with Swindell square tank. I raced Quarter Midgets until I was 16 and old enough to drive a Speedcar where again my pop Pearce helped out and had a car for me to race in my rookie year until my family expanded the team to a two-car operation.”

Now twenty-one years old, the fabricator says his career highlight so far is qualifying into the 2021/22 Australian Championship final at Archerfield, while his lowlight was crashing at last season’s NSW Speedcar Championship and not being able to contest the Australian Championship the week after, something that followed on from what he believes is one of the biggest challenges of his career so far:

“Not long after I started in Speedcars Covid hit and I felt that put me behind where'd I'd like to be in my career due to not being able to get seat time” he explains. “Also, with my family running two cars and my dad still being successful, I've had to do a lot of the work myself which can take my concentration away from the actual racing. That being said, I'm excited that I'll have my dad in my corner for PSW and I'm looking forward to learning more and more from him!"

Despite all the things he has had to contend with, Mills has had plenty of success behind the wheel, including ten Junior Quarter Midget feature race wins, claiming the 2018 VSDA Rookie of the Year, coming third in the 22/23 Southern Speedcar Tour and also winning that year’s Drivers Driver Award.

As mentioned before, Caleb is now thrilled to have his dad Travis in his corner ahead of the PSW.

“My dad and my uncle have supported and guided me through so much, always positive and encouraging but they'll also put me back in my place when it's needed! I watch and keep up to date with Speedcar racing across the world and follow guys like Tanner Thorson and Justin Grant - I like the way they are always looking to advance their knowledge and try new things.”

Mills will be hoping to utilise his own knowledge through the PSW and in particular is looking forward to the third round of the series at Simpson.

“I love that place” he says. “It’s a real drivers track, very technical and requires knowledge and balls!”

The self-confessed flat earther admits that on race days it can be a little tough, but is keen to get going on the PSW itself:

“I am a little neurotic on race day,” he laughs. “Especially when I get in the car and get ready - so just let me do my thing! But if we can get a top five every night and even win a round, we will be very happy!”

Mills will contest the PSW with support from Cars4us, Supa F Spares, Synergy Painting Group, Pevensey Motor Lodge, Lucas Oil Australia, Ash Hammond Sign and Design, Browns Engineering, CG Extreme Detailing, JB’s Speedway Spares and Gibbtrans.
