𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘉𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴,
Firstly, I want to say a very big thank you to all of you who have sponsored the making of the 21 Tara auras. The auras have been installed, accentuating each Tara’s magnificent compassion. The 21 Taras with their haloed auras are a source of peace and inspiration for all who set eyes on her.

In the next phase of bringing the altar’s magnificence to another level, we are embarking on adding Tibetan-style decorative artwork to the 2 columns and beams in front of the altar. We have commissioned the artist Peter Griffin, in France, to make the mouldings. The pillars will be in red and decorated at the capital with intricate Tibetan designs. The beams will have special purifying mantras carved on them. Upon seeing the mantras, the person can purify eons of negative karma.

We would be grateful for your support in making this project a reality. 7 December, Lama Tsongkhapa Day, in particular, will be an auspicious day for sponsorship. Thank you very much for your kind sponsorship to transform ABC’ altar to another level. May this create the cause for our Guru’s swift return.🪷

500 shares are available at $100 per share for sponsorship until fully subscribed, online at https://bit.ly/3N78unp or at the ABC office. Please note that any collection in excess of the project cost will go towards supporting the Centre’s other activities.

In addition to dedication by names, a general dedication will be made upon completion of the project for the 𝘴𝘸𝘪𝘧𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘢 for the sponsors, the people they dedicate to and for all sentient beings.🫶

Wow! The English translation of this precious sutra is now available for download. With much gratitude 🙏

Ksitigarbha Ten Wheels Mahayana Sutra from the Great Collection

For the benefit of students, Lama Zopa Rinpoche advised the translation of the Kṣitigarbha Ten Wheels Mahāyāna Sūtra from the Great Collection into English, kindly sponsored by Amitabha Buddhist Centre, Singapore. This 292 page translation is now available according to the wishes of Rinpoche!

In the wide-ranging discourse the Buddha expounds on the “ten wheels” that define a just king’s rule; the knowledge and qualities of a tathagata; the ethics, conduct and practices to be adopted by the Buddha’s ordained followers; the features and qualities of the three vehicles; the practice of confession; the ten virtues and their ripening results; and the ten perfections.

The Tibetan text in the Kangyur is a translation of the Chinese rendition; there is no extant Sanskrit edition. The masterful and uplifting English translation quoted below and available to all was undertaken by Gavin Kilty.

We are so happy to make this precious translation available to all. Please read more about this powerful sutra and download this new translation.

A extremely moving and inspiring tribute to our most beloved Holy Guru. A bodhisattva who never once rested, never once thought about himself. A life lived solely for the benefit of others. Rinpoche, please please please return swiftly!

Thank you to Ven Robina for this obituary, thank you 🙏

This Is the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, This Is the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life

As we all are now very aware, on April 13, 2023, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, our most precious guru and spiritual director, entered his final meditation at Kopan Monastery.

Although it is difficult to convey the extraordinariness of Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s life, Ven. Robina Courtin has written a deeply moving tribute to Rinpoche's many accomplishments, teachings, blessings, and activities.

We share it with the hopes that those who read it will be inspired to follow in Rinpoche's footsteps, and continue to help fulfil all of Rinpoche's wishes for the FPMT organization and the world:

The way to solve the problems in your life is to open your heart to others and to think differently. This has a better result and brings more peace and happiness in your life, especially ultimate happiness that you will experience forever and that you can give to everyone who is suffering and to everyone who needs your help.

🙏🙏🙏

When we don’t practice Dharma, when we don’t practice meditation in daily life, it is like we are totally living in a prison of attachment, in the eight worldly dharmas, the attachment grasping this life’s pleasure. There is no space to think of others, no space for compassion, no space for bodhicitta. There is only total attachment to our own happiness, to the happiness of this life, not to that of future lives and not to liberation for ourselves, but just for this life. So, we are totally imprisoned, with no space to help others who are suffering; the mind is totally occupied by attachment.

In the West there is so much talk about how we should love ourselves. Here, the definition of loving ourselves, the way to love ourselves, to take care of ourselves, is to live our daily life in meditation, in the Dharma, rather than surrendering ourselves to attachment, becoming its slave, being totally used by it like garbage, like toilet paper. Whatever attachment wants, we totally become its slave.

Instead of that, by the mind living in the Dharma, in meditation, we are free, independent. Independent of that most dangerous enemy, we are happy and peaceful. Then, we are able to engage in many virtuous activities. On that basis, it is much easier to develop compassion for others, to help others. Engaging in virtuous activities is the cause of happiness, not only temporary happiness but liberation and enlightenment.

The other way, as I mentioned before, by constantly following desire, worldly concern, without meditation, without the Dharma, we constantly engage in many negative karmas with our body, speech and mind. We harm ourselves and others so much by doing the ten nonvirtuous actions. Like the examples I gave and so many others, we harm ourselves and others directly or indirectly, and then we constantly experience problems, one after another. Our life is filled with problems. And life goes on like that. It is very, very sad.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s Advice for Practice during Solar and Lunar Eclipses

Lama Zopa Rinpoche often spoke about solar and lunar eclipses, which are considered auspicious for practice and provide opportunities for accumulating merit by multiple folds. As stated in the vinaya text Treasure of Quotations and Logic, the karmic results of actions are multiplied by 700,000 times on lunar eclipses, and 100 million times on solar eclipses.

We have created a new page which containing all of Rinpoche's most essential advice for solar and lunar eclipses, a resource we hope students will find very valuable:
fpmt.org/teachers/zopa/advice/practice-during-solar-and-lunar-eclipses

There is a partial lunar eclipse occurring this Saturday, October 28.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche pointed out that the multiplying effect of eclipses occurs regardless of whether the eclipse is partial or full. Rinpoche advised, however, that the merit-multiplying effect does not last the whole calendar day and as such, merit-making activities should be carried out during the occurrence of the eclipse. Therefore, to use the opportunity for practice, students should check for the timing of the eclipse in their own location. Such information may be found at timeanddate.com and similar websites.

For practice advice on merit-multiplying days associated with the major life events of Buddha Shakyamuni Buddha, see Practice on the Four Great Holy Days.

Nobody likes a person with a selfish mind, even in the office, because with that attitude their behavior is different. There is no respect when speaking. So many problems arise because the person becomes unkind to others. The result is most people in the office don’t like them. Wherever the person goes, even to different parts of the world, they always find problems with people. They are constantly unhappy because people don’t like them, and then they are always very depressed, very sad and angry because of all those problems.

So, with the self-cherishing thought, we become alone. Nobody loves us, nobody likes us, nobody wants to help us. Nobody invites us to parties; nobody takes us for outings. We might be working in a busy office or living in a family, with many people around, but we are alone. Even though physically there are many people around, we are alone. That is the shortcoming of the self-cherishing thought. People don’t come to see us. They don’t even like to greet us when we are on the road. If they see us coming, they cross to the other side or take another road, until we go away.

The person who is selfless, who has a good heart, who thinks of others, who cares about others, who cherishes others, the compassionate person, the good-hearted person—when that person is with the family everybody is happy; they enjoy that person’s company. Everybody in the office is happy to see them, to have them working there. Inside the house or outside, wherever they go, others enjoy their company; they can feel the compassion or the warm heart of the person.

Anybody who experiences anger needs to practice patience. If you have a sickness, you need medicine. Like that, patience is needed. It is not a burden; it’s necessary. When you practice patience, anger becomes gradually more and more rare. Eventually, there is no anger, and then there is no enemy to destroy your merit. That is how you can achieve liberation. When there is no enemy to destroy your merit, you can have realizations. Realizations come, liberation comes, then enlightenment, and you will be able to liberate so many sentient beings from cyclic existence. That is the benefit. Each time you practice patience, the benefit is as vast as the sky. Think in the long term.
Practicing patience is the path of the bodhisattva. When you meet obstacles, be strong. Then the obstacles won’t last. If you are strong and practice compassion, patience, thought transformation, and emptiness, then obstacles don’t last.
