History is Gay

History is Gay

A podcast that examines q***r folks that have always been there in the unexplored corners of history. Because history has never been as straight as you think.

04/12/2023

New Bonus Ep! Leigh sits down with scholar and creator of the Q***r Digital History Project Avery Dame-Griff to discuss his book The Two Revolutions: A History of the Transgender Internet and all it contains about the magic of the evolution of trans folks on the internet. From BBSes (bulletin board system) to Twitter, we discuss how trans people have always existed on and created their own unique spaces on the World Wide Web, tapping into Avery’s extensive research, interviews, and media archaeology.

We choose to remember. We refuse to forget.

In the US we have lost at least 33 of our trans siblings to violence since last November.

Globally, we have lost at least 320 trans lives.

Today, on trans day of remembrance, we honor their lives and the grief of their loved ones and communities.

Visibility is a double-edged sword.

Today is , and this year especially, it’s a hard one. Trans people are facing an extreme level of attack from all sides. It seems like every day I wake up and there’s some new horror of legislation that’s dropped.

Visibility provides for normalization, access, services, & representation. These are literally lifesavers.

Visibility is also what the transphobes are trying to erase. Almost 400 BILLS worth. They are trying to erase all facets of transness from public life. They are trying to eradicate us from spaces, from our own bodily autonomy, from our own identities and selves. This is backlash from trans people becoming more visible in everyday life, and that terrifies them.

Visibility also adds a target to our back in this time. I’m “lucky”— I’m white, non-binary and cis-passing. I haven’t undergone any physical transitioning. This protects me largely from the kind of street violence my other trans siblings are facing.

But that invisibility is isolating, too. I want desperately when I see other trans people to have them see me, to let them know “hey, I see you, I’m right there with you. This fu***ng sucks.”

To the cis people in my life:

What are you doing today, right now, to make life better for trans people at a time where we’re literally at step 8 on the genocide scale?

What are you committing to *actively* doing today and taking up time today to do to fight the fact that the trans people in your lives are literally being legislated out of existence?

Trans folks, please take care of ourselves and do a little resting today because the world is fu**ed.

Started by of , today is also Trans Day of Staying In and Having a Nice Snack, because damnit we deserve snacks and s**t is the hardest it’s been in a damn while right now!!

Trans folks, drop your venmo or cash app below to receive snack $$ and other forms of mutual aid.

Cis folks, send $$ for snacks to folks who drop their handles. Donate to trans orgs fighting this fight. CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES. SHOW UP AT POLITICIANS HOUSES.

DO NOT. LEAVE IT. TO TRANS PEOPLE. TO DO THIS ALONE.

We lost an absolute legend today. Judy Heumann was an international recognized disability rights activist who was instrumental as one of the original activists who drafted the Americans with Disabilities Act.

She was a major player in the 504 Sit-In demonstrations in 1977, after the secretary of health refused to sign regulations for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the first set of civil rights disability protections in the U.S. The sit-in is the longest occupation of a federal building in U.S. history and changed the game for non-violent protest and disability rights in America. Q***r disabled people were heavily involved and the fights for q***r and disabled civil rights have long been intertwined and stood together in solidarity.

May her memory be a blessing.

First observed in 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the life and work of the civil rights activist. It is celebrated this month to honor his birthday, January 15th 1929. He would have been 93 years old.

Slides:
1. Martin Luther King Jr and his wife Coretta Scott King. Active alongside her husband in his work, Coretta Scott King took a leading role in the movement after his death. She established the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change and led the campaign for a national holiday to be established in his honor. Later, in the 80s and 90s, she would advocate for LGBT equality alongside the ongoing fight for racial justice.

2. Memorial march in Memphis, April 8 1968. The King family had traveled to Memphis to lead a nonviolent march in support of striking sanitation workers. It was there in Memphis where he was assassinated. Just days later, Coretta Scott King and her children led the march, now a silent walk through the city in honor of her husband and still in solidarity with the workers.

3. Martin Luther King Jr. with two of his closest advisors, Reverend Ralph Abernathy and Bayard Rustin. Bayard Rustin worked closely with King during the Montgomery Bus boycott in 1956 and went to coordinate the 1963 March on Washington. Rustin was an out gay man and we explored his life and legacy in episode 22!
