A little, personal point of pride this past week was finding that one of my 3 year old apple trees has its first ever fruit set this year! It won’t produce enough to make much cider yet, but I thought I’d also share a glimpse of our yearly tradition of fall cider pressing!

Dropped and pieced up a big one this morning, which made for some fun action shots on the ground! Not a bad job to wrap up a nice afternoon. We set up the chipper 30 yards away, bombed all the limbs, and kept the chipper busy. 1 hour and 15 minutes from arrival to clean up on this little hickory. We usually have several days each month devoted to small jobs within a city or travel route. Yet another chonky stump. This guy took a while to cut up and clean up. They may not look like much when they are standing in your yard, but once you start removing material you become painfully aware of the work just to get rid of the trunk. Here’s a look at the process of that leave lay from last week. We had quite a bit of rigging to keep this tree off the house and drive. If you look closely you’ll even see where previous storm damage had caused limbs to fall on the gutters. Trees in close proximity to a house are time bombs. Eventually some amount of damage will be sustained by the home and possibly but hopefully not the residents. This homeowner made a hard but wise choice in having this tree taken down. This mulberry was spreading over the house, the shed, and reaching for the neighbor’s house as well. The homeowner also had a dog that would track the berries into the house. They’re great for wildlife due to their berries being an excellent food source, but often not so great in a yard where the berries and dead branches from under the canopy make a huge mess. These giant white pines were in pretty rough shape, constantly dropping brush in the yard, and in close proximity to the house and barn. For this removal we had the room to drop the trees without reducing the canopy first, and it made for some awesome felling shots! No matter how many years you’ve watched the process, it is always incredible to see how much the trees leaf out in the beginning of may. This video is only two weeks old, and leaves had barely started on the trees yet. This maple removal is a great example of how we utilize rigging to remove trees that pose a serious risk to a home. In the video you will see that the portion of the tree which overhangs the house is cut into manageable sections and safely moved away from the house as we bring it to the ground. Because of its lean and proximity to the house, this tree needed to be removed. Though sometimes beautiful and difficult to part with, trees like this can crush a house and potentially even be fatal to the people inside.
