'Bearnagh Twilight - The Mournes at 1am!'
My second post from my bivi camp on Bearnagh's summit on Thursday night shows my view at 1am in the morning! A combination of an everlasting twilight across the sky and a full moon illuminating the landscape meant it was stlll relatively bright. In fact, I had a very noticeable shadow caused by the moon.
The view here shows the Mourne Wall snaking down from Bearnagh's summit towards it's North Torr. On the right over the mountains you can see Dundrum bay and then lots of County Down's towns and villages all the way to the bright lights of Belfast in the top left, with the transmitters on Divis and Black mountain seen clearly.

Very exciting news of Fin Whales in our waters off the Cork and Kerry coast !
IWDG received a strong set of images taken by Tomas Kelly of Bond Air Services Ireland, on 25th May 2015, during a routine Kinsale Energy, crew changeover helicopter flight to the offshore Kinsale Gas Fields, Co. Cork. The sighting was of about 7-8 large whales and the series of images confirm these to be fin whales, the planet's second largest animal. Most of the images show clearly the white lower jaw on the right side which is diagnostic for fin whales. While thiese are not the first fin whale records of the 2015 large whale season, they are our first images and the largest group size, which confirm their presence now along the Cork and Kerry coast. IWDG have had recent fin whale sighting records off both Valentia Island Co. Kerry and the Beara Peninsula in Cork.
Please note that these animals are likely to be well out of range from land for anyone using standard optics, such as binoculars. At such distances a powerful spotting scope, preferably with a wide-angle eye piece will be required, and even then you are unlikely to detect much more than distant vapour plumes peppering the horizon as they surface to breathe. Let us know how you get on.

Living beings as our kith and kin - we need a new pronoun for nature Calling the natural world 'it' absolves us of moral responsibility and opens the door to exploitation, writes Robin Wall Kimmerer. To make our kinship with all life on Earth a life-affirming daily reality, we need a new pronoun for our fellow beings.
