Connection or Control?

Connection trumps Control EVERY time no matter who we are relating to, a co worker, employee,
partner, tantrumming toddler or troubled teenager.
ALL BEHAVIOUR IS A RESULT OF STATE
Our mental/emotional States drive our behaviour.
If we want to change our behaviour look to our State.
If we want to change another’s behaviour, look to our State!
Connection is a very different experience to control as they arise out of different States.
Control arises out of Sympathetic State, fight/flight; there is a need to be right, to win at all costs, to prove the other wrong because we feel threatened at some level.
Connection maximises the gentle self, the Parasympathetic self, a self that is secure in its ‘self’ and has no need to defend its ‘self’
Control maximises the aggressive/fearful self, the Sympathetic self, not a version of self to bring into any of our relationships because it will only provoke an equally aggressive/fearful reaction arising out of the other’s fight/flight State aka Sympathetic self.
To be a transformative power in our lives and that of others, to be confident and capable, knowing how to handle ourselves and life’s challenges well, (self efficacy) we look to our State!
A powerful and empowering question to ask throughout our day is ‘What’s my State?’ or ‘How’s my State?’
We can ask it internally of our children, co workers, employees, partners, anyone and everyone we rendezvous with …
‘What’s his State right now?’ ‘How’s her
State?’
When we are witnessing behaviour we feel we could react to, that question reminds us to focus on OUR State and hold that space for connection through our safe social engagement State.
When our dominant State is Parasympathetic State we support both ourselves and those we engage with in Well Being; Well Being is the State of being happy and healthy.

Presents or Presence?
Caught up in the collective conditioning of a commercial Christmas stressing over finding the perfect present for this one and that one?!
We show our appreciation, affection and love through presents but if we are spending most of the festive period stressed out, we are missing out on the gorgeous gift of our Presence to those around us.
When we show up in the fullness of who we are, we exchange energy where we FEEL the love we have for each other.
Presence can be defined in terms of personality traits; a confident and charismatic person has presence.
Presence can also be defined as a state of being; we can all potentially have presence and develop it with practice.
Presence is a state of conscious awareness arising out of our safe social engagement state, our parasympathetic nervous system state also known as our rest and digest state.
Hanging out with the Horse Herd I see them shift states with ease as they respond to environmental stimuli.
Syrus, with me since April, is the most ‘flighty’ of the herd; his previous owner gave up with him because “he’s always on his toes” and yes, he spends a lot of time in flight mode and benefits from lots of soothing and softening. The safer he feels, the less reactive he will be.
I watched him as he shifted state and settled in for an enchanting encounter.

NOTE: Always, I set my state BEFORE moving with the herd.
We cannot be present to another in a stressed state because it is a defensive state. To be present is to be open to connection, to engagement.
This is our natural state, our truest state and we all have the capacity to shift from stressed states to our more natural social engagement state.
When we do, we now show up in the fullness of who we are, our highest expression, free to engage with meaning and emotion; the connection matters to us and we feel it emotionally.
HOW TO SHIFT STATE FOR PRESENCE
Unplug from your phone!
Bring awareness to the Body, especially where you hold tension. Relax to release, softening through the soma with some stretching.
Key areas to relax: soften that jaw, roll those shoulders back and bring those shoulder blades down and in, opening through the chest and lengthening through the neck and spine.
Even better if you can stretch through the torso ; alternate arms up overhead first and then reaching over to increase ventral vagal tone. Repeat as necessary!
Bring awareness to the breath and begin to breathe consciously moving the breath in the direction of deep, slow, regular with a gentle emphasis on lengthening the exhale.
If your belly expands on the inhale, then the diaphragm is being engaged and the ventral vagus nerve is being stimulated but don’t worry if it doesn’t, just let the breath be deep, slow and regular. Repeat as necessary!
Open to the other’s world; I see you, I hear you, I feel you, receiving them as they respond to you and sensing that exchange of energy.
Every encounter can be an opportunity to practise presence and aside from the other person being uplifted, it’s the most hedonistic experience for you; FEEL the energy and FEEL how it elevates you!

If we want to change behaviour, we address State, not behaviour.
Labelled ‘mean with both horse and human’ this Lusitano mare had been kept on her own by the Portuguese charity with no one able to get near her.
As she stands surrounded by her herd it is clear we have come a long way since 2020 on our journey to Freedom from Fear.

Saoirse is not a mean or aggressive horse but she was a frightened horse who when unable to run, would bite and kick.
I am not an equestrian, I did not focus on modifying her defensive behaviours.
I am an educator who practises the Science and Spirituality of State, merging both in my methodology.

In terms of Spirituality I think of Socrates “in every person there is a Sun, just let them shine” and practise Unity Consciousness connecting with the Source of Life within all sentient beings.

No One Size Fits All
There can not be a ‘one size fits all’ solution to anything.
In the context of the stress and belly fat reduction challenge at Way To Go Well Being, let’s clear up confusion because clarity feels better than confusion!
Every individual is unique on multiple levels, a complex chemical factory, shifting states, always in flux, with conditioning, experiences and patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour making us
each one-of-a-kind.
As in the last post our brain/mind/body is its own apothecary and the magic lies in being our own alchemist, merging with that magic within to restore optimal function and homeostasis.
Our focus is to facilitate you finding your flow within a framework of practices and habits.
Practising the practices and habits personalises them; think ‘bespoke’ where you are customising according to your own uniqueness.
How do you do it? How do you find your flow?
You feel for it, you sense it.
How do you know you have found your flow?
You feel better, you feel good.
And right now we may be working within the context of the stress and belly fat reduction challenge but what we are really leaning towards is finding our flow in the totality of our life experience.
You see there is no fear in a flow state; to access a flow state we need to be in our more natural relaxed receptive state and that’s where all the magic happens!
We move into Magician magic when we transcend what’s trending as we know we have all the tools within.
When we fuse feeling with focus, intuition with intellect, heart with head,we consistently show up in Magician magic!

Solly’s Stress and Sugar Synergy
Back in April Solly was one of three horses living out 24/7 and he was the dominant Gelding, happy and healthy enjoying unrestricted grazing.
He then went from one of three to one of six horses losing his place in the original herd hierarchy.
Solly’s behaviour quickly deteriorated as he became aggressive with the other horses; shortly after physiological symptoms followed.
A vet visit confirmed laminitis in all four hooves, an inflammatory disease of the endocrine system, a condition associated with equine metabolic syndrome.
Sound familiar?
Yep, just like in us it’s an inability to regulate blood sugar level.
Conventional treatment for laminitis works with the idea that it’s the exogenous sugar in the grass that has triggered the laminitis so restricted grazing /box rest /anti-inflammatory medication is required.
There had to be more to it for Solly than the sugar in the grass; he was used to unrestricted grazing, none of the other horses were affected and the deterioration in his behaviour demonstrated a shift in State from his Safe Social Engagement to Fight or Flight.
Chronic stress results in high cortisol levels and high sugar levels.
To separate Solly from the herd would have escalated his stress levels even further so box rest was not an option neither was restricted grazing as the herd move freely and he needed to be able to move with the herd.
My own understanding about how elevated stress results in high cortisol levels which is the primary driver of high blood sugar led me to focus on the root cause (multi system dysfunction) rather than the symptoms of laminitis.
My task was to help Solly relax his reactivity aka Fight/Flight SNS State which would reduce his cortisol and blood sugar levels and therefore the symptoms of laminitis would subside.
As preyed upon animals horses are super sensitive to emotional energy so I wanted Solly to respond to my Safe Social Engagement State and begin to come into resonance with my State through entrainment.
As herd-oriented mammals, horses are driven to connect and I could be his Epona in the field and from that place of safety, he could bond to the other horses.
I engaged with his reactive state from my Safe Social Engagement State aka PNS State through lots of different massage techniques to release tension, breathing practices to encourage him to sync his system with mine and being a presence with him in the field.
Within a week Solly was completely clear of laminitis and running freely again with the herd.
He can socialise with all of the herd and has had no reoccurrence of previous symptoms. Solly is a happy healthy horse, at home in the herd.

Consciously breathing in the direction of deep, slow, regular aka diaphragmatic breathing is the most potent practice to reset the ANS which when in Balance keeps you happy and healthy INCLUDING optimal body weight.
Consciously breathing brings you out of the thought/feeling Psychobabble so you don’t go down the Rabbit Hole.
Posture Power
You can not breathe correctly as in naturally as in diaphragmatic breathing when the body is slumped
and/or held in a tense contracted State
Adjust posture … extend, lengthen, open and expand.

The Peme Pegasus Project
We shall be hearing from the Horse Herd on our way to the Project becoming a participation project next Spring.
This is not about liking horses although we may or having horses although we may; it is not a riding experience either.
The Pegasus Project is a potent partnership on multiple levels and dimensions between Human and Horse.
This partnership is an exploration of the Science and Spirituality of State, the HOW of Happier and Healthier Living.
This partnership is about the Harmony of Human and Horse through the Science and Spirituality of State and how that harmony can be realised among all sentient beings.
There is no dogma here, no religious belief required, so do not let language distract from opening us to the mystical magic of elevating our experience of Life through both the Science AND Spirituality of State.
Clearly the name Pegasus points to the Archetypal Energy that is found and revered in the mythology of many cultures!
The winged horse is akin to the mythical Bifrost (rainbow bridge, the Aurora??) that connects the ethereal to the earthly; a lived merging of Spirituality and Science could lift our Lives to new levels of Happiness and Health. The Ancients intuited what Science now demonstrates!
The process of Practising the Practices creates the mastery, moving us from the State of survival to the State of thriving.

Interactions are so much more soft, smooth and satisfying when I shift State, not just with Horse but in Human Rendezvous too.
Our Relaxed State is a safe, social engagement State; FEELS GOOD when the Oxytocin, Dopamine and Serotonin are flowing and we are on that Magic Mood spectrum of Mellow to Marvellous!
Humans like to feel Happy and as sentient Beings, so do Horses.

Mood Management is Mind Management is Stress Management!
Stress is the response of the Brain/Mind/Body to the demands/stressors placed upon it. To meet the demands placed upon it, the Brain/Mind/Body are mobilised via the physiological mechanism of the stress response aka SNS activation.
Aha, I hear you say, “physiological response” so what’s my Mood/Mind got to do with my response to a stressor?
Stress shows up in our THOUGHTS/FEELINGS FIRST aka the Science of State; Mind then Body, Psyche then Soma, Happy then Healthy.
What’s a demand?
Life is a demand because Life is dynamic so the demands/stressors are integral to Life. So are you stuck with this? Yes but it’s a good thing, a great thing!
Stressors or demands don’t have to threaten us; they are the mechanism by which we expand, by which we grow and we want that because that’s where the fun and fulfilment is, that’s where all the good stuff is.
Every time we respond to a stressor, we experience new learning, adaptation and growth; there is an expanded fuller version of us but the key word here is respond, not react. To paraphrase Darwin, we survive and thrive when we are most RESPONSIVE to change.
If YOUR Stress is messing with YOU, you are most definitely in Distress (demand EXCEEDS capacity) and not Eustress (capacity MEETS demand) which Hans Selye who is considered the Father of the Modern Stress Theory discussed.
Time for some Stress Management, time for some Mind Management, time for some Mood Management!
And if we are depressed, know that Depressed States come out of Stressed States and Mind Management is the Way To Go; that’s why Mood Matters Most.
Hans Selye identified the General Adaptation Syndrome demonstrating how we move through three predictable stages in response to any stressor; Alarm when SNS is first activated, Adaptation when PNS kicks in to return to homeostasis or balance and finally Exhaustion when we break down (Depressed State) due to persistence of demand/stressor which then exceeds our capacity.
If we are living in chronic Stress with no idea of HOW to practise Stress Management, then the Brain/Mind/Body shuts us down shifting us from Stressed State to Depressed State.
Stress is necessary but it is the DEGREE of stress we experience and we get to control that in a myriad of ways with Mind aka perception, mindset, thoughts, feelings, mood, attitude leading the Way!
