Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this Whim Reebok Classic and every small step over the last 5 years that contributed to its fruition. At Whim we talk a lot about how “sneakers were the gateway” growing up, they were the first thing we cared about stylistically and opened us up to an entire world and literal lifetime of style. One of us has had deadstock Reebok questions “on ice” for 20+ years.. a big inspiration for our ice block campaign…

Over the last month or so a few people have asked us something to the effect of “how did you get a Reebok?” and the best part about the answer is that it revolves 100% around our Free Golf putting greens. We opened month-long Whim Golf Club #2 at 170 Allen St 5 years ago in September 2019 and brought them new friend with us. He hit Leo to come by who brought Kyle and a bunch of other people over the course of month. Three years later we met Mubi and became friends watching the Champions League final with a small crew sitting in the dark on the turf of Whim Golf Club #5 in the back of Colbo. Mubi commentated the entire game. Over the following two years Mubi held us down as we figured out our first ever sneaker collaboration - something that means more to us than we can describe. Our Reebok Classic design draws inspiration from an image of a golf ball flying through the sky. We took our favorite swatches of ~blue and ~white to design a sneaker in a balance of leather suede and nylon. True to our design ethos, we worked to design a good-looking sneaker that stands out through anonymity - no more, no less. The design reminds us of something we might buy as a back-to-school sneaker in a mall in 2003.

In reflecting on our “Free Golf” work at the driving range, we discovered that our design visualizes a critical moment in the trajectory of a beginner golfers’ career – the first time they hit the ball off the ground into the air. This first-ball-in-flight beginner golfer experience represents a universal moment in life - the first small success which feels huge after the trial and error that comes with trying something new. This small success feels amazing and entices the person to keep going. Whim Golf exists to shine a light on these parallels between sport, art, and life.
