For many years in my “things to do before I died” list, I had written Making a Mural. That dream has become true in ways I had not imagined: making community murals. Among women. Whether you believe you are an artist or not. Organized together. Shouldering each other. Learning together and from one another. Loving us.
Here what we did.

Books have always changed my life.

This photographs aren’t mine, but I want to share this post that brings me to tears. There is so much hope held by people that a new administration can finally see them and treat them with respect...but there has always have been a gap between those who have the power and those who want to be heard. When will all be treated as squeaks?

Aquí, my compa and I are signing off eight months of living by my desk creating the final art of my book, Bright Star, Lucero. Although I began making my book more than a year ago—researching, writing, sketching—I began the color art exactly on the days the quarantine was announced. There are still details to finalize, the authors note to write, color proofs revisions, etc, but right now I am tired and delighted with this precios and intense part of the journey accomplished.

I fell in love with Yuyi's work through this project and her love letter to librarians really taught me about the goodness that can be generated by expressing gratitude.

Skippyjon No: Confronting Mis- and Under-representation of BIPOC Identities in Children’s Literature 14/11/2020

Perhaps, like me, you could not see at first what was wrong with certain books, and it is understood, because we often lack the tools to see the damage they inflict; we have been taught to not question something shinny and stablished such a published picture book. But we should, and this is a great webinar for getting critical tools.
