“Mommmmm…what are we going to do if we don’t have Internet today???”
Where I live, storms came through and knocked down several trees. Many are without power, but my house is, thankfully, only without Internet. A minor inconvenience when you run an online store and need to print off or order SEVERAL designs, but I am taking today as an opportunity to
slow down.
read a book.
play with my kids.
take a walk outside.
throw the ball to my dogs.
visit my parents.
pull out an old board game.
I think sometimes we get so busy and don’t see these moments for the opportunities that they are. If you’re without power or Internet today, use this time to enjoy whatever is surrounding you. The sun is shining where we are. Go outside and soak it in.
Live life a little slower today. ❤️
Thank you teachers!
❤️❤️❤️

I will stand by this statement til the day I die:
Valentine’s Day is the absolute most chaotic holiday celebrated in a school.
Period.

I am a little late posting our Teacher Feature Friday, but didn’t want to miss the opportunity to recognize one of the best math instructors around, Bianca G.! I met Bianca 15 years ago during my first year teaching, and I still consider her a friend. Head on over to the blog to see what she has to say about education, books, and more!

Over here at Teacher Happies, we LOVE teachers. As a classroom teacher myself, I know the rigors and stresses of the job, and I also know that I couldn't make it without other teachers. That's why I am so very excited to celebrate many of the wonderful educators in our school systems. This week's Teacher Feature is Ms. Bianca G. Make sure you scroll down to the bottom to see her wishlist....

I listened to a new podcast today called "Self-Care for Educators" by Dr. Tina Boogren. I only had a few minutes to squeeze in the first episode, but I was intrigued! She listed many of the benefits we receive from music, including improved blood pressure, better sleep quality, and mood change. One of her self-care strategies was to develop a playlist of songs that either brought back happy memories or pumped you up. It got me thinking about what I may want to have on my playlist, and while this is a fairly eclectic mix, you can guarantee that if I hear just one, the radio is cranked up and I am belting it out with a smile on my face.
"Cecilia" by Simon and Garfunkel
"Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty
"Fishin' in the Dark" by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
"Callin' Baton Rouge" by Garth Brooks
What would be on your playlist?
It’s that time of year again! Spring seems to be the most popular season for field trips, so we have planned accordingly. Let us outfit you, your team, or your school groups for the big day!

Hey. It’s Monday, and for me, it feels like it’s already been a whole week. I always love a good pick-me-up after a long day at school. Tag a teacher who could use a friendly reminder that they are wonderful!
If you haven’t ever made this face in your classroom are you even a teacher? 🤣
Thanks Jeff Johnsey for letting me steal your photo!
I had a new teacher message me earlier this week about her paycheck. She was afraid to speak out because she isn’t tenured, but her concerns were legitimate. A new teacher with no insurance being cut from her check is making $2,600 a month.
Another teacher sought me ought after school. “How do I love my job again?” she asked. ”I’m doing a lot of work, for not a lot of pay, and I feel like I’m about to break.” I told her that after 15 years in education, I was asking myself the same question.
Here’s the reality. I do love my job. I get to teach my favorite subject, ELA, all day, every day. I absolutely adore my students. Do they drive me crazy sometimes? Yes! (And probably vice versa 🤣.) But I know that at the end of each day they leave my classroom feeling loved, and I feel their love in return. I think the two teachers who spoke to me would agree with me on both of these points.
So where does the problem lie? I can’t pinpoint everything, but I can highlight some major issues. What the public doesn’t see is all the “extra.” If you’ve read any of my Teacher Features, you have seen comments about all of our “hats” or added responsibilities. No longer can we go to school and just teach. We have to actively monitor the emotional, social, physical, and behavioral health of each child. That is a monumental task for one student, but it is an even bigger undertaking when it involves 20+ children.
There are days where whole lessons are put aside to progress monitor or test. Meetings regarding these assessments can take up entire planning periods, so we’re forced to stay after school, work in our classrooms over the weekend, or take it all home to prepare for the next day. We hear a lot about providing student-centered instruction and care, but you will never convince me that over-testing puts the student first.
Planning engaging lessons takes TIME. Many of us do have scripted lessons, but tell me the last time one of those textbook writers taught a group of second graders. With all of the activity surrounding a child these days, it takes more than reading straight from a textbook to reach a student.
Many of answer questions from parents over the weekend, we attend ballgames and recitals, and we WORRY about who is being cared for at home. I guarantee that you could ask any teacher about this last bit and no one would consider it a burden. It is a joy to see students thriving outside of the classroom; however, this time is rarely acknowledged by anyone in the upper levels of administration. It’s easy to feel overlooked.
So, what I want to know is, how much time are you spending working from home or staying over? Are you able to get everything done during your planning period? If so, TELL ME HOW! I need to learn.
It’s another Teacher Feature Friday! Ms. Jamie F. is a middle school teacher right here in Alabama. I’d love for you to read what she has to say about teaching on the blog: http://teacherhappies.blog/2023/02/03/teacher-feature-friday-3/
When I was a child, I only ever read fiction. The one biography I did read was about Marie Antoinette, and I just wasn’t a fan of how that one ended. 🤣 Since moving to 3rd and 4th grade I am finding that my students love reading nonfiction. I have a fairly good assortment of Nat Geo readers, and a few from the Who HQ Collection, but I am looking for your recommendations on another series or set to bring in! What are your favorite nonfiction books for upper elementary or middle grades?
