New research has found that depression can play a direct role in the development of 📣
Our researchers used genetic data from thousands of people to shed new light on the relationship between the two conditions, and whether one can cause the other.
This helped us understand how the conditions are linked, revealing shared genes and the effects of depression on bodyweight.
This new knowledge could help healthcare professionals to improve care and support for people with a history of depression and prevent more cases of type 2 diabetes 💙

❓ Did you know that changes in female hormones during the can affect our blood sugar levels – making managing even more challenging?
We've heard from our you that the advice and support for managing diabetes through the menopause just isn’t there. We've listened - and this we want to give you an insider look at a project we’re funding that will help to plug this gap.
🔬 Using interviews and surveys, Prof Vivien Coates will investigate how menopause affects women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes from a wide range of backgrounds. This information will help them to highlight what supports are needed and how these can be provided in the best way.
💙 This research has the potential help women to get the tailored support they need to deal with the challenges of menopause, helping them to live healthier and happier lives.

🔬 It's that time of week again... today we have a special lined up for you for DiabetesPreventionWeek!
We're taking a look at some exciting research trying to see if we could use gut 'bugs' as drugs to help prevent type 2 diabetes. Are you ready? Let's take a look into the lab... 🔎
We have millions of bacteria living in our gut, called our gut microbiome. It plays an important role in our health, and there’s some evidence that it could have a hand in the development of type 2 diabetes.
Prof. Marc-Emmanuel Dumas is drilling down to find the exact species of gut bacteria which are linked to type 2 diabetes. If this project pinpoints species that increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, it could help us find treatments that keep their levels as low as possible.
Additionally, if other species are found which reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, researchers could use these gut ‘bugs’ to develop new drugs designed to prevent the condition.
🤩 We look forward to seeing what Prof. Dumas and his team find! Head to our website to find out more: https://orlo.uk/9i1xo
Save the date - there's just one month to go until ! 🤩
This year, we want to celebrate everything that makes you, you. Because you’re so much more than your numbers...
Morning blood sugar, pre-meal blood sugar, counting carbs. HbA1c, blood pressure, how many carbs were in that sandwich again? Diabetes can feel like a never-ending stream of numbers. And some days, they just don’t add up. 🔢
Diabetes doesn't stop, but neither do you. You juggle the ups and downs, you face diabetes head on every morning (whatever your blood sugar!) and you don’t let it hold you back.
There'll be lots of ways you can get involved this , so watch this space with more info to follow soon! 👀

Melanomas can appear anywhere on your body, but they're more common in areas that are often exposed to the sun.

👣 Research we funded has shown for the first time that short breaks from sitting can help people with type 1 diabetes to spend 14% more time with their blood sugar levels in target range.
Scientists ran a study comparing blood sugar levels when people with type 1 spent 7-hours sitting down, and when they broke up their sitting time with frequent, bite-sized bouts of walking.
🪑 Even people who do lots of exercise can spend long periods sitting down, but the results show making a simple change to avoid this could have a big impact on blood sugar levels, and potentially reduce the risk of diabetes complications.

This we’re excited to share a new diabetes research strategy with you that is designed to speed up progress towards new treatments.
We partnered with NIHR to understand the UK’s strengths in diabetes research and what helps research to have a real impact on diabetes care.
The strategy points to research areas where we can do more, and where the needs of people with or at risk of diabetes aren’t being met.
We hope it will help the UK diabetes research community to focus in on areas with the most need and the greatest promise, so that treatments and lives can be transformed sooner.
