The NYS Department of Health is pausing the implementation of a new law that would have prohibited healthcare providers from asking patients to pay upfront. Originally set for October 20, this change is now on hold.
Additionally, new rules on credit card payments for medical bills are in effect. Patients will receive notices stating that these payments are no longer considered medical debt, and by using a credit card, they waive protections like limits on interest rates and wage garnishment.

NYSED Issues Alert on Dental Sleep Apnea Practice⚠ Dentists can prescribe and create oral appliances for sleep apnea only after a physician’s diagnosis. But conducting or offering sleep apnea tests isn’t part of the dental scope of practice. For CE credits, sleep medicine courses must focus on fabrication and care of oral appliances.

A recent study from the University at Albany, SUNY has highlighted 31 high-need areas in NY, mainly in rural regions, where oral health services are critically lacking. The study points to issues like low dentist-to-population ratios and limited access for Medicaid patients as key barriers.
Programs like Seal-A-Smile are helping bridge the gap, but more action is needed. In an interview with Spectrum News 1 Capital Region, Dr. Katie Rothas, New Dentist Board of Trustee, called for collaboration to address these disparities. "We all need to come together—specialists, public health, private practitioners—to improve access and care.”

Medicaid revalidation has resumed as of August 2024. Providers must revalidate every five years or when notified by the DOH—wait for a mailed notice before applying.
