There are a few on my FB List who are interested in antique photography like stereo views, cdv images, cabinet photos, etc. which is why I am mentioning this here. We have listed on ebay a series of 27 1870's Holy Land images in stereoview format by the Norristown, PA photographer Samuel Ritter Fisher whose images are few and far between in the photography market. In researching this photographer we have found no other examples of Holy Land images by Ritter and very few by him on any subject. The images I am posting is a composite image of all of the images in the Ritter listing plus larger images of the fronts and backs of 2 views. Our user name on eBay is imajgin. The listing is an auction listing. The auction listing number is 144939693465. The auction closes on February 20.

Pass Mugs! Today we listed five pass mugs. Pass mugs or cups were made so that people could more easily share their beverage with others by passing it along with each person grasping it by one of the handles and handing it to another. Considering the weight of some of these mugs along with the additional weight of the contents, this was undoubtedly a practical solution to the strong possibility of dropping the mug when attempting to pass it to another person and spilling the contents which very likely would have been beer. This pass mug weighs 2 pounds 5 ounces.

These mugs were made with two, three or more handles and were made in a variety of materials. In the case of this mug it has two handles and is made of copper. Pass mugs were made and used for centuries. It is lined with a different metal, possibly tin. While pass mugs were popular in Russia and we have listed others that we believe are Russian, we believe that this mug was made elsewhere. Perhaps somewhere in Europe, England or maybe even America?

This pass mug has some special attributes in that it has an engraved design that wraps around the upper and lower sides as well as a circular design in the side opposite the handles. There it has the date “1841” and a script letter “R”. Perhaps the mug was personalized for the owner. The handles are interesting too as the part of the handle that would be grasped by your hand is tubular. The hollow tubular handles have some dents.

The tops of the handles have an interesting shape to them unlike the simple strap type handles on the other pass mugs that we are listing. One handle is made distinctly lower than the other handle deliberately. This does not appear to be due to having been bent downward after it was made. It appears to have been made that way on purpose. We are guessing that the two positions made it possible for the person passing the mug to another to choose whichever handle was the most comfortable and safest for the pass. The bottom of the pass mug has a six pointed star design impressed into it but not a star like the Star of David. More like a shape you might expect to see in a molded cookie actually. I don’t know the significance of that but maybe it was merely a creative flourish that the maker added to make the mug more special. Possibly this pass mug was a presentation mug made to be given to “R” for a particular date or event?

Currently on eBay at listing #144133235593.
