SMOKY SKIES -- The haze across the area today was due to wildfire smoke from fires in Canada. This is likely to continue Wednesday & Thursday. Smoke from these fires was visible on the satellite Tuesday.

Temperatures will be cooler Thursday and Friday. Isolated and patchy light frost is a low risk in rural and low-lying areas tonight and also Thursday night. Warming temperatures are expected through the holiday weekend.

A smoke plume from wildfires in Canada was visible on the satellite Tuesday afternoon heading in our direction. Wednesday is expected to be a sunny day, but the sky may be murky with smoke that filters some of our sunshine early Wednesday.

Un-fun fact -- Not only was today the coldest start to May in 45 years, it is also only the 6th time since records have been kept that the high temp to start the month didn't reach or surpass 50° 🥶

Kiki demanded an adventure in the beautiful weather today. (Volume up and you can hear her talking to me ❤️) After a trip to the vet with the windows cracked for fresh air (posted in comments), she also got a walk in the sunshine (also in comments) ☀️ 🤎 What’re you doing to enjoy this sunny, spring day? #dogdad #seniordog #pitbull

11:30A Saturday (04/01/23) Update Next line of storms about 100mi. west and already prompting severe T-storm warnings. Arrival here will be around 12:30pm. As this moves through, we will have an elevated risk for severe wind gusts. It should be out of the area fast, by 3pm. Winds stay a bit gusty into the evening, temps will start falling quickly behind this line of storms. It will be cold enough for snow to mix with rain this evening.

Get the yardwork 🍂 done Friday if you can to enjoy the beautiful weekend ahead. Temps start warming Friday, continue warming to around 70° for highs both days this weekend. ☀️

I shared the 👑 of the house’s sunbathing forecast yesterday—this is my other buddy, Champ. His favorite thing to do is be the “goodest boy of all the good boys” and nap outside (on furniture of course because he’s spoiled 😂) — Clouds increase Saturday but still a beautiful day for a nap in a hammock, or on a dog bed. 😉 Enjoy the start of the weekend, the chance for a few sprinkles returns heading into Saturday night.

Saturday 11:45a (07/23/22) Radar Update— Complex of severe storms entering central Ohio. It’s about 100mi. away now and will make a close call with our southern counties. Storm chances climb for all early this afternoon. A severe T-storm WATCH has been issued for Mahoning, Columbiana, and Lawrence counties until 6pm to account for the close call with this system. Stay alert early this afternoon.

It is bittersweet that this was shared with me on this specific date. Today, May 6th, would have been my nephew Teegan Kamzelski’s 29th birthday. My nephew died by suicide five years ago this month. I wish I didn’t have a story to share, but I am proud to have the ability and a platform to share it. May is mental health awareness month. WKBN and WYTV have partnered with the Trumbull County Mental Health & Recover Board to raise awareness and help end stigmas surrounding mental health care through a PSA campaign. I am proud to be a part of that. We can’t change the past but we can determine what we do with the events in the past that shape us. I share my story in hopes that it inspires others to seek help when struggling with their mental health. I can’t think of a better way to honor Teegan than to help advocate for ending the stigma surrounding mental health. If you knew my nephew or want to help me honor Teegan, please help me in spreading awareness of mental health resources. —The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at 1-800-273-8255 —The Crisis Text Line can be reached by texting HOME to 741-741 It is okay not to be okay. It is okay to seek help. You deserve to be happy and live your best life—if your mental health is preventing that, talk to someone who can help you. Please stop the stigma and the needless struggles—if you need it, reach out for help.

Weather is behaving for a change, giving us a chance to see the Lyrid meteor shower at the peak, tonight ⬇️

🌬Some of the peak wind gust reports from around the area today 🌬

Weekend outlook—hopefully the last weekend of next month will have some 80° weather in it 🤞🤞 For this final weekend of the month, winter returns ❄️ ☹️

☘️ Today tied for third warmest St. Patrick’s Day on record, is only the fourth since records have been kept to see highs reach the 70s, and was our warmest since 2012 ☘️

7:30PM VIDEO UPDATE We are at the halfway point with this storm—here’s what to expect for the rest of the night.

Wind chill advisories in effect through Thursday morning. Here’s what to plan for 🥶 Also, please don’t leave any pets out in this cold—bring them indoors to stay warm. If you can’t bring them in, you must make sure they have a warm shelter and water that isn’t frozen.

Though it’s cold and lonely in the deep, dark night, I can see a new record low and an opportunity for a Meat Loaf tribute. 🥶 Stay warm out there!

Heads up Thursday—there’s an elevated risk for icy spots after todays brief warm-up 🥶

A little virtual greeting card from us to you—Happy holidays to you and your loved ones! 🎄🎅🏻 And may your 2022 be merry and bright!

Happy Solstice! Winter officially begins Tuesday and will last through Sunday, March 20th. If you aren’t happy about that, perhaps thinking of it this way will—Spring begins in just 89 days ❄️💐

Sending out a big thank you to 33 News viewer Michelle Firster from Mercer. I was off the last four days and came into work today to a surprise gift waiting for me at my work station. Michelle—that was sooo thoughtful of you. Thank you so much!!

1PM radar—Gusty wind possible in this line. It will work through the Valley over the next hour and a half. Behind it, temperatures will start falling fast. Gusty wind continues into the evening as temps drop.

Did you see the lights fly over the valley this evening? This was taken at 6:28PM. These are SpaceX Starlink satellites. The satellite network is operated by SpaceX and is intended to provide internet across the globe. This series appears to have been launched yesterday. You can track the visibility here: https://james.darpinian.com/satellites/?special=starlink#

If you’re planning on doing a Thanksgiving morning 🦃turkey🦃 🏃‍♂️trot🏃‍♀️, bring a change of clothes just in case. There will be some showers 🌧around Thursday morning. 🤞Fingers crossed🤞the trotters can avoid them but everyone has a chance of seeing a little rain.

🌩New Promo🌩 I’ve had people comment on how well Paul and I work together during storm coverage—the reason is we are actually really good friends. We spend more time with each other than anyone, sharing both a workspace and work schedule.

While you may encounter showers heading to the fair in the morning Wednesday, showers end early in the afternoon. No weather worries Thu/Fri but make sure you plan for much cooler evenings as the sun sets.

☔️August 2021 is the 6th wettest month overall on record—only 0.24” away from the top 5. These stats are based on rainfall at the airport in Vienna, our official climate reporting station.
