NORTHEAST BRIGADE CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL SERVICE
PRIVATE NATHAN B. PACE
COMPANY D, 2ND HEAVY ARTILLERY BATTALION, LOUISIANA
SATURDAY, JUNE 9 2024 @ 10:00 AM
On June 8th 2024, the Northeast Brigade of the Sons of Confederate Veterans conducted a memorial service for CSA Private Nathan B. Pace at 169 Dub McKinnie Road, Marion LA. The event was held at Reppond-Pace Cemetery located in pasture behind the original homesite of Louis Repon, which was homesteaded in 1820.
Commander of Sgt. James Nicholson Camp Donnie Kimbrell served as Master of Ceremonies. Chaplain Michail Baldwin of the Nicholson Camp open the service with an excellent devotional and prayer. Jon McKinnie of the Ward camp presented the biography of Pace and the old Reppond house place. Scott Bardin, descendant of Private Pace welcomed us and thanked us for conducting the service.
Division Commander Brian McClure gave a most inspiring talk about our Confederate Ancestors and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. We observed the “Libation Ceremony and Placing of Wreaths” at the gravesite.
Commander Lt. Elijah Ward Camp Kevin Adkins presented the Confederate flag to Scott Bardin, descendant & property owner.
Commander Adkins commanded the troops into position near the cannon in orderly form and upon command, the unit fired three rounds of rifle and cannon fire to commemorate the event.
Commander McClure asked Scott Bardin, a descendant of Pace, what he thought of the ceremony. His response was, "I was overwhelmed." Compatriots, this makes all our efforts worthwhile. Gentlemen, as usual, you did a wonderful job representing our organization and our ancestors.
Nathan B. Pace (1847-1912) had to wait until he was 16 years old in 1863, before he could enlist in the Confederate cause. He served in Co. D, 2nd Heavy Artillery Battalion, Louisiana. The 2nd Heavy Artillery Battalion was formed at Alexandria, Louisiana, during the fall of 1863 with three companies, later increased to four. Serving in the Trans-Mississippi Department, the battalion was stationed on the Red River near Shreveport until the spring of 1864. The unit was then ordered to man the heavy guns at Columbia, and later served on the Ouachita River. It was included in the Confederate surrender on June 2, 1865. Lieutenant Colonel George W. Logan was in command.
After the war’s end, Nathan B. Pace (1847-1916) married Jane Reppond (1838-1891) on Jan 18 1866, and lived on the property homesteaded in 1820 by Jane’s parents, Louis and Henrettia McCormick Repon. Nathan and Jane had 8 children including 3 sons and 5 daughters.
Nathan and two of Jane’s brothers, Ettienne and Beatice Reppond served during the Civil War. Ettienne Reppond is buried near the old baseball field at Linville School. Beatice died during the Siege of Vicksburg and is buried near Jackson, Mississippi.

“On Saturday, January 22nd, 1916, at the residence of his son-in-law, R.L. Edwards, in Marion, Mr. Nathan Pace, a pioneer citizen of that section of the parish, passed away. Mr. Pace was sixty-nine years of age at the time of his death, and for some time had been suffering with a dangerous heart trouble.
Last week his relatives carried him to New Orleans hoping that specialists of that city might perform an operation and prolong his life, but after a careful examination, they were informed that his case was incurable. His remains were interred Sunday at the family cemetery located in the pasture of old Louis Reppond house place. Mr. Pace is survived by several grown children, including Mr. R.E. Pace of this town, and to them we extend our deepest sympathy.”
Commander McClure stated, “I want to thank the camps and reenactment units that made this possible: Elijah Ward Camp, Sgt. James W. Nicholson Camp, Richard Taylor Camp, Thomas O. Benton Camp, Thomas McGuire Camp and Claiborne Invincibles.
“Many thanks to our reenactors of the 31st Louisiana Infantry, the 13th Louisiana Infantry and the 4th Louisiana Field Artillery, Cameron's Battery. You guys were awesome!!!”
