My youngest graduated from high school this past weekend. And with that event, we closed the chapter on 16 years of home education. I will forever treasure that journey!

Way back in 2008, I started a blog and decided to design it myself. (Yes, I was one of those old school mommy bloggers!) My daughters were young, and I found connection and community through sharing our stories online.

Those were the early days, and so I found my online home at Blogspot. (By the way, if you are still on Blogspot, we need to talk! 😂) Before long, others were asking me to design their sites too. I dove into all things blog design and started taking on projects when I was ready, first on Blogspot and then exclusively on self-hosted WordPress.

And here we are, 14 years later. My homeschooling years may have come to a close, but my website design business is still going strong!

For over 13 years, I have been building WordPress websites for writers, creatives, small businesses, and non-profit organizations.

I work from Upstate South Carolina, but my clients are located throughout the United States and beyond. When I’m not behind my computer, I love a good book and a cozy cup of coffee. I love mountains more than beaches, dogs more than cats, and savory more than sweet.

I hear a lot from clients that they aren’t really blogging anymore, and that they’re just posting all of their content on social media in short form posts.

That sounds super simple and great, right? Post where your people naturally gather and get more interaction.

The problem is that our social media accounts are so fragile. How many people do you know who have lost their account to a hacker or had their account randomly shut down overnight? It happens, more often than we’d like to think.

So what’s the answer?

When we post our content exclusively on real estate we really have no control over (like Facebook and Instagram), we’re asking for trouble. You work so hard to build your online presence. Make sure you’re taking steps to keep your content and intellectual property somewhere that you can control, not just on social media.

Maybe we shouldn’t give up on blogging quite yet. More thoughts on this to come …
