Genre: Fantasy, Fairy Tale Retelling, Cottagecore.
A story seeped in so much history, lore, and depth of a forest, this book follows our protagonist Sorcha and her trials and tribulations to protect the people she loves. Sorcha flees to the forest when her evil stepmother turns all six of her brothers into swans and tries to kill her as well. In an encounter with the forest spirit while hiding, Sorcha is promised safe return of her brothers in alive humane forms only if she sews six shirts from a thorny bush and remain silent throughout this whole ordeal. For years, she does just that, and even in the worst and best possible scenarios, she keeps her promise against all odds.
Funny thing is, after reading 100ish pages, I realized that this retelling is actually of one of my very favourite fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson, that I read so many times when I was little. And honestly, that realization alone was enough to make this a favourite read. But add the lush and wonderful landscape, so well written characters, and a very unexpectedly incredible romance, I cannot emphasis enough how good this book was.
If you are looking for a classic fantasy read, with cottagecore aesthetics and angsty romance, this is THE ONE!
P.S. please check trigger warnings before cause it has some heavy ones.
