Why do you charge more than the other guy?

I am asked this often by potential customers when quoting jobs. The answer is simple, we are a legitimate business. Anyone can buy a lawn mower and call themselves a landscaper. Most of these "fly by night" lawn cutters were never properly trained to use the equipment correctly, which leads to the next thing I hear. "I don't like the big riding mowers on my lawn, they tear it up" Sure, an operator without training can do damage with any mower. The key is hiring a professional. You must also realize the things that a legit business faces when competing against the "fly by night" company. Overhead is the biggest thing. As a legit business we have to roll this into our service price. Taxes, Wages, fuel, workman's comp,liability insurance, commercial vehicle insurance, equipment theft insurance, truck and equipment maintenance, truck & equipment payments, building rent, utilities, office staff, license fees, and so much more. Our "fly by night" competition has to cover his fuel and the rest goes into their pockets. They can do a job for half of what we charge and still make a bigger profit than we do. It's too bad that most people only care about a cheap price and help those that cheat the system and degrade the principals American small business was founded on. The next time you hire a contractor, think of these things before making a decision. Beware of trucks with no name or magnetic signs, PO box addresses, no uniforms, and cell phone only contact information. Help keep legit small business alive in the USA. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
