COURT REJECTS BID TO HALT RIVERS GOVERNOR'S SPENDING AND VOTERS REGISTER RELEASE TO INEC

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has refused to halt the expenditures of Governor Siminalay Fubara of Rivers State. This decision comes pending the hearing of a substantive suit filed by former speaker of Rivers state House of Assembly Martin Amaewhule and his commitee of friends.

Justice Emeka Nwite, ruling on the motion ex-parte marked FHC/ABJ/CS/984/24 and presented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Sebastien Hon, SAN, ordered that all defendants be notified instead. The matter has been adjourned to August 7 for the hearing of the motion on notice.

The defendants include Governor Fubara, the Accountant-General of Rivers, the Rivers Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), the Chief Judge of Rivers, Justice S.C. Amadi, RSIEC Chairman Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retired), and the Government of Rivers State.

The suit, filed by former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and Martin Amaewhule on July 15, lists the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Zenith Bank Plc, Access Bank Plc, and the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) as the first four defendants.

Amaewhule and his commitee of friends sought an injunction to prevent these banks from honoring any financial instructions from Governor Fubara. They also aimed to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from providing voter registers to the RSIEC ahead of the October 5 local government elections.

However, with the court's decision, Amaewhule and his committee's plans have hit a snag. It seems their celebration was premature, leaving them with egg on their faces once again.

The thanksgiving was held to thank God for the appointment of Chief Tony Okocha as the member representing Rivers State in the NDDC Board and His appointment as the Caretaker Chairman of the APC and the birthday of his beloved wife, Lady Ogechi Okocha.

GOV FUBARA EXPRESSES GRIEF, TO SUPPORT BEREAVED FAMILIES OF EAST-WEST ROAD FIRE DISASTER

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has expressed grief over the fire disaster on the East-West road that caused loss of lives and destroyed several vehicles on Friday night.

Governor Fubara after inspection of the carnage that occured at Aleto, Eleme area near Indorama Petrochemicals Limited, noted that when he got information about the fire incident on Friday night he quickly dispatched the security agencies to step in, describing the situation as unfortunate and commiserated with those that lost their loved ones and vehicles as a result of the inferno.

"In fact, I got the information through the MD of Indorama and I immediately alerted the security agencies to make sure that they step in. And from what we are seeing this morning, it wasn't a pleasant situation."

"From what I am seeing, we recorded a huge number of vehicles destroyed and souls lost. But I have already asked the security agencies to give us a full brief so that we can assess the situation fully and see what we can do to support the families that are bereaved and how to cushion the effects of the losses which we believe is no fault of a good number of them."

Gov. Fubara who was accompanied on the visit by the Commissioner for Energy, Hon. Uche Nwafor urged commuters on the East-West road to be cautious as the situation of the road calls for carefulness, adding that the disaster would have been avoidable if motorists also behaved properly.

The disaster which was caused by a PMS ladden tanker that caught fire witnessed loss of lives and several vehicles burnt at about 7:30pm.

Today, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, inaugurated Governing Councils of three Rivers State tertiary institutions. The Institutions include Rivers State University, Nkpolu Oruworoko, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni and Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Port Harcourt.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara charged members of the Councils to help in raising the standard of education in the state by improving on the curriculum that includes skills acquisition programme.

RCCG Sunday school teacher reportedly k!lls wife in Rivers State.

A pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Chidozie Michael, has been reported to have allegedly b£aten his wife, Ufuoma, to d£ath in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

As gathered, husband of the deceased, who is a Sunday School teacher with the RCCG branch in Port Harcourt, is alleged to be on the run after committing the act inside their apartment.

Eyewitnesses narrated that Ufuoma, a mother of three boys, who were of age 10, 7 and 5 respectively, was pronounced dead by medical experts at a private hospital yesterday where she was rushed to by her brother.

Ebi Layo, a close friend to late Ufuoma, narrated the ordeal the deceased went through before her last breath, saying her 32years old friend, who hailed from Delta State, was often b£aten by her husband over sundry arguments.

She explained further that anytime the man want to carry out his onslaught against his wife, he would lock the room and beat her to his satisfaction before he will let go.

According to her, the routine beating started again late yesterday night. But this time around, the wife did not come out as usual or respond to the calling of the children. The husband later came out to order the children to go to bed.

“It was in the morning of March 5th, 2024 that the husband called the brother of the deceased, telling him that there was an emergency. When the brother rushed down to his house, he met the lifeless body of Mrs. Ufuoma, but did not meet the husband at home.

“The body of the late Ufuoma has since been deposited in the morgue as the husband is still at large. The children are also in police custody pending when family members will come to claim them”.

Rivers State Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu says the vision of the Governor Siminalayi Fubara led Administration is to build a peaceful Rivers State that will outshine its peers in the comity of States.

Prof Odu stated this while playing host to the State Branch of Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, 13th February, 2024.

The Deputy Governor, who said it is always good to make our presence felt globally, noted that Governor Fubara has always been responsive when it comes to things that deal with human interaction and promote the Rivers People.

Prof. Odu who expressed delight that the Rivers State Branch of Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) is making waves beyond Nigeria, commended the Association for mentoring young female doctors to excel because those who do not have mentors stand the risk of going astray.

Prof. Odu reiterated the fact that the States Chief Executive has effective health care delivery as one of his top priorities, stressing that he believes that it s only when you are healthy you can put in your best.

Earlier, the President of the Rivers State Branch of Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Dr. Cecilia Leloonu Nwibubasa, said they were at the Government House to acknowledge the significant strides the present administration has recorded in advancing healthcare, education and empowerment which according to her directly impacts on the lives of women.

Every year, Herbert Wigwe had this culture that he did not miss.

He was a big fan of the Super Bowl, the biggest sports ritual in America, and so he cleared his table to travel to California to watch a sport that helps him relax and rejuvenate and which he considers one of his guilty pleasures.

He left Nigeria on Wednesday and sadly, he would not be coming back again.

Let me digress.

In 2002, the late Herbert and his partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, had a dream.

To own a bank of their own

At that time, they were working for Guaranty Trust Bank as executive directors.

However, the boardroom politics of GTB were so intense and toxic that they knew they had to exit and do their own thing.

So they incubated and hatched a dream to buy a bank of their own.

Even when they did not have the resources to buy a bank, they were not discouraged; rather, they started looking for investors who could invest in their dream.

One of the investors they met who eventually bought into their dream was Cosmas Maduka of Coschsris Motors.

With enough money in the bank, backed by solid dye in the wood investors, the Access Bank project was launched by these two ambiguous young men who were in their 30's.

AIG was 36.

Herbert was 35, but his young age did not stop him from dreaming big and dreaming what was possible.

Their age at that time eventually became an albatross, an Achilles hill, as the CBN staff told them to their faces that they were too young to own a bank, and rightly so.

But they were unwavering and never allowed the pessimism of the CBN staff to discourage them.

Access Bank—at the time, the 65th largest of the 89 banks in the country—was a small bank before AIG and Herbert took over in 2022.

A mid size, small bank.

AIG was the CEO of the bank when they started before handing it over to Herbert in 2013, who took over from where he stopped and then turned Access Bank into the monstrous beast that it is today.
