It's Guinea Pig Friday! Guilliver Guinea Pig Meets the Birds, Gordon Hutchings, c. 1961
When mid-century modern magazines were full of whimsy ... and wheeks!
The ever adventurous Gulliver Guinea Pig finds himself meeting lots of new bird friends who live by the pond, including ducks, a heron, an owl a robin and a woodpecker amongst others - your ornithology expertise welcome!
Delightful and surprisingly detailed work by Gordon Hutchings who took over the illustrations from this particular ongoing series in the long-running British children's comic magazine Playhour, published by Amalgamated Press/Fleetway/IPC between 1954 and 1987.
With Guy Fawkes Night fast approaching, please remember to check your bonfires for hedgehogs who may be sleeping.
Our spiky friends are rapidly on the decline and you can help to prevent unnecessary loss. Follow this wildlife friendly advice from British Hedgehog Preservation Society:
• Don’t build your bonfire until the same day that you will light it. The longer it’s left, the more likely that a hedgehog will find its way into your bonfire.
• If you need to build your bonfire in advance, make sure you place chicken wire one metre high all the way around the bottom. This should be placed at an outward angle to make it more difficult for hedgehogs to climb.
• If you have stored materials for your bonfire outdoors, before building it move them to a different patch of ground before you start.
• Always place the bonfire on open ground but never on a pile of leaves as a hedgehog may be hiding underneath.
• Always check the entire bonfire for hedgehogs before lighting it. Remember that they tend to hide in the centre and bottom two feet in particular.
• When checking, lift parts of the bonfire section by section using a pole or broom. Do not use a fork, spade or rake as this may injure a hedgehog.
• Use a torch to look inside the bonfire and listen for a hissing sound, as this is the noise that hedgehogs make when they are disturbed or distressed.
• Always light your bonfire from one corner, rather than in the centre, in order to give hedgehogs a chance to escape if they need to.
Remember, remember the Fifth of November but don’t forget about our wildlife! 🦔🔥

It's Guinea Pig Mystery Friday! Sense of Taste, Jan Brueghel the Elder and Peter Paul Rubens, 1618
Pigs, pigs, where are the pigs? If you can locate the pigs in this painting, you have very good eyes.
Enjoy the painting as a whole, but you may have trouble locating the guinea pigs. However, they are there in the painting of a painting on the far left - a very clever way to ensure guinea pig inclusion! I was thrilled to find them after all though they are difficult to see without magnification.
See the comments for piggy closeup and detail!
This set of paintings on the five senses (Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste, Touch) was one of the most successful collaborations of Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Brueghel the Elder. Thoughtfully not including guinea pigs as a potential taste sensation in the foreground, Brueghel manages to include guinea pigs by painting a small version of another of his own paintings, "Garland of Fruit Surrounding a Depiction of Cybele" which DOES include guinea pigs (see the famous tiny Blackie and Brownie eating peas in the closeup of this one).
Art notes: A satyr pours nectar of the gods into a sumptuous goblet held by a nymph leaning on a table full of food, alluding to taste and its relation to the idea of abundance. In this apparently pagan, lustful and animal-natured setting, the garland and the three paintings in the background bear a moral and Christological meaning. The Offering to Cibeles reveals a disproportionate fondness for abundance and wealth; The Abundant Kitchen, near the top, while less refined than the palace tables, alludes to human weakness in the face of gluttony, which is more moderate in the Rustic Kitchen and The Wedding Feast at Canna.
Location: Museo del Prado, Madrid (check for availability, not on display)

Teach Me Tuesday!
"The abdominal cavity of a guinea pig accounts for approx 80% of their body. 😲
This means that their chest cavity is very small. The most important organ in the GIT of a guinea pig is the caecum.
This is a large structure where fermentation occurs and allows the guinea pig to get nutrition from relatively low value food ie hay and grass. It is important for guinea pigs to eat continuously* (you should seek veterinary advice if your pig hasn't eaten for more than 8 consecutive hours) and for their guts to remain mobile. Gut stasis can be fatal if severe.
* this does not mean your guinea pigs need to eat every second of every day😂"

I made a wish a long time ago to someday publish a book. And now, I have two.
I created Rabbit, not yet bear, in spring 2019, to bring hope and comfort to myself while I processed my own feelings of grief, loss, anxiety and depression.
From 2009 to 2013 I experienced a miscarriage, the end of my marriage, the loss of both my parents, and my own cancer diagnosis.
To top it all off, while on a medical leave from my work at the time, my job was terminated.
It was a lot in a relatively short period of time, although I don't remember thinking of it like that then. I was more concerned with putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward, no matter how graceful or ungraceful I was at doing so. In the back of my mind, I knew that sooner or later, I would have to sort through all of my feelings. Rabbit (and Bear), helped me do that, and I shared my simple drawings and dialogue among my friends and family online. I had no expectations beyond that, only the hope that my words might be useful to someone else somewhere along the line.
A few short months later, and quite literally overnight, the whole world seemed to need my Rabbit. COVID-19 had arrived and one of my drawings, ("l'm afraid," said Rabbit) went viral after it was stolen from my social media and cropped to remove my name. Since then, I have worked hard to chase after that image and reclaim it.
Who are Rabbit & Bear?
I don't assign Rabbit or Bear any specific gender, and I look at them as the younger, questioning version of oneself in the form of Rabbit, and the older wiser version in Bear.
Not surprisingly I see my parents, grandparents etc. in Bear with the things they would try to pass on to me. And I also see the child I lost in Rabbit. They have become my way of having back something of what I lost: my parents and my child.
The questions expressed and answers given are the things I wish I could pass on to my child and the things I still wish I could hear from my parents as I navigate the world without them.
The fact that Rabbit, along with Bear, has reached so many is humbling.
I don't have all or any of the answers, at least not for anyone else but me.
Everyone's journey through life will be uniquely their own. What I can offer, though, is Rabbit & Bear.
Every one of us, at some time or another, will experience dark and light times in our lives.
I'm no different.
The loss of my parents, a pregnancy, my job, my marriage, a cancer diagnosis, and also finally processing and reconciling abuse from my childhood, lead me through a very dark time that lasted many years. I struggled daily with anxiety and depression, and I still do and likely always will.
I'm not upset about it though.
Ups and downs are part of life, and each of us has to figure out the best way to carry on for ourselves.
I have good and bad days but I'm happy to say, at least in this moment, there are more good days than bad. More than what existed 10 years ago when my world was turned upside down. I have learned to cope in my way with the help of doctors, therapists and my small but close-knit group of friends and family. And one of the ways I cope is through Rabbit & Bear. Drawing and writing Rabbit & Bear, writing poems and stories, help me relax, find and keep my bearings and process my thoughts and big feelings.
You see I'm neurodivergent too. I always felt that my brain saw and thought about things in a different way than was presented to me at school. So, when I was diagnosed late in life with ADHD, and most recently autism, it came as no surprise. It was validating, and a relief to finally be recognized.
For me, being able to see my thoughts and feelings as expressed through writing and drawing has always helped me understand them better.
The more complex a subject, or a thought, or an emotion the more my brain wants to take it and make sense of it, boiling it down to its essence.
That's why Rabbit & Bear sometimes seems so simple.
The seeds of Rabbit & Bear's existence were born in my time of darkness.
Through them, and along with therapy, supportive friends and family like my partner and step-daughters, the light began to return to my life.
Rabbit & Bear continue to help me, and I share them in case they might be able to help you to.
Together, we return with the light.

"I'm afraid." said Rabbit.
"What are you afraid of?" asked Bear.
"I don't know." replied Rabbit. "I just am."
"Then I will sit with you until you're not afraid anymore." said Bear. "We'll face it together."

Our Story
Our story began between 2011-2012, It was around that time that Oso, our very first Guinea Pig, entered our lives. At first we thought about getting a chinchilla, but after a lot of thought we decided to adopt a Guinea Pig. Guinea pigs seemed to work better for our life style. Don't get me wrong we love all small critters, Its just that pigs were the best fit for us. After about a month of searching we found Oso! He is the almost albino Abyssinian. A couple of weeks later we adopted Sonic, a smooth american satin. Several years past then Ollie, a cream colored Ridge Back, was added to the family.
From personal experience, lots of research and studying we learned how to properly care for our Guinea Pigs. These beautiful, intellectual, sentient little beings entered our lives and hearts. They aren't just pets they are members of the family.
In the beginning we used wood shaving bedding. The wood shavings were very messy , shavings would get stuck in our carpet. We would have to use a broom to sweep our carpet and then vacuum just to get the shavings out. The wood shavings would clog our vacuum and leave shavings dust everywhere. One day we noticed Oso, who was now very old in Guinea pig years, was having trouble pooping and seemed very sick. We took him to the vet to find out he was eating the wood shavings bedding!
