Inspiration is the Bible as authored by God through human instruments. And we believe that because men wrote the actual words and because they actually came out of men’s minds makes them no less the Word of God or the words of God than had God spoken them Himself. God used men and chose from out of their experience and their own vocabulary the very words He wanted in the holy book, and so this is the God-breathed word.

Paul could have made his argument many ways without having a New Testament at his disposal. Indeed, in the course of his epistle to the Romans, he returns to this point and sometimes brings up additional arguments that prove the sinfulness of all humanity. For example, in Romans 5:14, he points out that “death reigned from Adam until Moses” even before there was a written law defining what sin was. He argues that sin must be universal because death is universal. Sin is, after all, the whole reason people die. “Death [entered the world] through sin” (Romans 5:12). “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). And everyone dies. That 100 percent statistic furnishes undeniable proof that everyone is a sinner.

The basics of God’s moral law have been inscribed on our hearts by God Himself. Romans 2:15 also says the human conscience bears witness to that law. So whether the thoughts of our minds accuse or excuse us, the conscience bears witness to our guilt. No matter how hard we try to suppress, muffle, or shout down the voice of conscience, in the end, Paul says, “God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus” (Romans 2:16).

There is no knowledge of God from reason alone. Paul says that the mind of the natural man cannot comprehend God. There is no knowledge of God from experience. There is no knowledge of God from the world systems of religion. There is no knowledge of God from philosophy. Every once in a while, it is true that those various things like reason, and experience, and religion and philosophy will intersect with truth. So, I’ve said that’s like that clock that doesn’t run; it happens to be right twice a day. So, there will be an intersection with truth from time to time. But, true knowledge of God comes only from the revelation of God.

There are times in my own life, and I know you go through these too when you feel weak, right? You feel lonely, and you feel frail, and you feel sinful, and you feel like a failure and like a pilgrim and a stranger in the earth. And boy, when you get into those times, how refreshing it is to go backwards and say, “Hey, I may have my doubts, and I may feel my weaknesses, but let me reiterate the people who ran the race with patience and endurance, and didn’t give up, and kept at it, and ran through crisis after crisis after crisis, and God honored and gave them victory. And that encourages my heart.” That’s what he’s saying. The God of yesterday is the God of today. Jesus Christ is the same what? Yesterday, today, and forever.

If you are among the elect—those who have repented of their sin and trusted in Christ—then you can be certain that your election was not based on your faith or actions. If it was, grace would no longer be grace. God chose you of His own free will for His own divine purposes. This reality is the foundation of praise and worship because it is what Paul meant when he said that all things—including salvation—are “from Him and through Him and to Him. . . . To Him be the glory forever. Amen” (Romans 11:36).

God has made a provision for souls of men; it’s the blood of Jesus Christ. Don’t add anything to it, just accept it. And when by faith you receive Jesus Christ, you’ve applied the blood of Christ.
