Yes You Can HAND DRUM

Had such a blast drumming in the Alliston Potato Festival Parade on Fri night with the Funga Drummers! I go in this parade every year, and it is always tons of fun. This year we had great weather, great crowds, and of course--- great music!

Had a great time at the Collingwood Music Festival on Sat, I facilitated two "Yes You Can HAND DRUM circles for youth. Everyone was very happy with the experience!

28 of us gathered, and shared the JOY of drumming.... It was a wonderful day, and we will do it again. Many who came to this workshop were new to hand drumming, but you would never know that hearing us PLAY! Our drumming sounded excellent! Regardless of skill level, a great time was had by ALL! People were grinning from ear to ear, toes were tapping, bodies were moving, and our hands were flying on the drums! :)

We learned and played 5 different rhythms, and also had several rounds of free "jamming". Some rhythms were fast, some slower, some just hopping! Drumming can sound like thunder, but also like gentle rain. It can invigorate us, or soothe us. Soooo much fun to let loose, and let our inner rhythm out!

This May workshop was co-hosted in Barrie by myself Deb Brown from Yes You Can HAND DRUM, and by Jeffosaurus Rex and Pasquale Spadafora from Corporate Recess Dragon Boating. I love co-creating and these guys are good people, and alot of fun to work with. Jeff did alot of the coordinating and arranged our wonderful location at Yoga , I did the drum facilitation, and Pasquale did several songs at the end where we jammed along to his flute playing, which was magical!

After the workshop, nobody wanted to leave! We will do this again for sure, when the time is right. I look forward to that!

Hey drummer friends.... do any of you have a few extra djembes I could borrow? I am going to be hosting a hand drum workshop May 5th, and would like to find a few more drums for this event. Hoping to locate 4-6 drums I can borrow, preferably djembes, ashikos, or doumbeks. Details for this drum event will be posted soon, for anyone interested in attending. The event is hosted by the Orillia District Art Council as part of their "Summer Nights" program, and is free to the public. Hope you are able to make it! Bring your djembe and a lawnchair!

Sooo excited, getting ready for the Hillside Festival next weekend. I am facilitating a hand drumming workshop called "UnLeash Your Rhythm" on Friday night from 8-9, then I am fancy free to enjoy the rest of the festival for Sat and Sunday. Cant wait, Hillside is my freedom run, my playtime, my hand drumming Mecca, and I love to reconnect with community and friends who share my love of Hillside . There is no other festival that even comes close! Specially if you love to hand drum, as in addition to 3 main stages offering fantastic musical performances all weekend, there is a whole section of the festival dedicated to Drum and Dance, which offers workshops ALL weekend long. But my favorite part of the festival is the midnight fire in Volly Village where we drum until the wee hours. Drummers are a community. Afia Walking Tree is a master djembe player, and a woman of soul who has given much to the drum community in the US and in Canada. She is a walking tree, but also a dancing lightning bolt, spreading not only the joy of hand drumming, but also words of spirit and wisdom that energizes all who meet her. If you met Afia, you wouldn't forget her. The last few years Afia has been living in Jamaica (doing good work to help the world). Recently her Mother passed, and there is a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses. Even if you havn't had the pleasure of drumming with Afia, please consider donating anyway.

Lately I have been doing a series of hand drum workshops for the Community Living Assoc. in Alliston. This org. provides services to people with a variety of mental disabilities. Drumming offers people not only the joy of rhythm, but also self expression and connection with others. Being with this group has been an amazing and heartwarming experience. They are beautiful souls, and are totally enjoying the hand drumming workshops. Watching them open up to the music, witnessing those big smiles as they participate and share the rhythm fills my heart. I have now done 4 of 7 workshops. Each week the workshops usually have aprox 25+ participants, and a bunch more participating on Zoom. We are using a variety of hand drums, and various percussion instruments. I have formed bonds with many of the people there, and truly want to give them a wonderful experience sharing rhythm.
Last week management complimented me after the workshop, saying they really appreciated how I am responding to the individual needs in ways that are really benefitting the clients, and it made me feel really great.
Each group I do a Yes You Can HAND DRUM workshop for is unique, this group is truly special. I give them alot of my energy, but they give me alot back too. It is very fulfulling to know you have helped bring joy to people. I LOVE hand Drumming!!

Had a great time during the March Break, ran a Children's hand drum workshop at the Penetanguishene Museum. It was alot of fun! The workshop sold out quickly, and the museum said they would welcome having more workshops. I look forward to going back. It is a wonderful feeling to share the joy of hand drumming! :)

Well, its been a long time since I did much drumming. I am happy that drum events are starting to open up again. I had intended to start up the Yes You Can Hand drumming workshops again this summer, but due to circumstances beyond my control I am unable to at this time. Perhaps later in the summer.

For all of you who still have credits with me for YYC workshops paid for pre-Covid, I am fully willing to give you a refund if you wish. Or you can take the value in trade for some of my artwork. Or, you can keep your credit until I am offering workshops again.
