🥰 What an amazing interaction @emmajanehayden had with one of the Grey seals (Halichoerus getups) of Skomer island last week! This year we have been incredibly lucky to have some very close encounters with inquisitive seals. We never approach them, and wait for them to come to us. This one, as well as three others, followed us as we explored the kelp beds, regularly checking in to see what we were up to. 🚨BRUVS CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT!🚨 The first rule about fight club is: you do not talk about fight club… unless they’re crabs!🥊🦀 Whilst making the most of the good vis on Monday at St Brides, our BRUVS attracted some curious crustaceans. Crabs can smell food just like humans, however instead of having nostrils, they can detect smells using a set of antennae located between their eyes. We were lucky enough to get ringside seats to this demonstration of competitive behaviour for food between some green shore crabs, Carcinus maenas, who had been enticed by the smell of our bait. Whilst the primary aim of our BRUVS research is to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) around south Pembrokeshire, footage like this, of different species and their behaviours is really important and can be used in further research into these individual species or the ecosystems as a whole. I spy with my little eye 👀 Can you spot something peeking out of the gills of this beautiful Blue shark? Its a copepod! But what is that? They are small crustaceans that attach themselves to the gills or skin of sharks and other fish. They can sometimes be spotted by the two little 'tails' that you can see in this video.
