Why do mountain bikes have fewer gears now?
The reason some mountain bikes have started to have this sort of system is that removing the front derailleur makes the whole system more reliable. Mountain bikes have to “dump gears” a lot, which involves rapid shifting between ratios. By only having a single ring on the front side with no front derailleur, shifting through a lot of gears very quickly is a lot easier, and you don’t run the risk of dropping the chain off the front.
The reason this has happened now is because of a particular innovation - the clutched derailleur (picture 2)
Clutched derailleurs were originally invented to prevent “chain slap” - which is where a bicycle chain that doesn’t have any tension on it whips around when you hit a bump.
But this improvement also allowed the rear derailleur to take up a lot of chain without whipping around or dropping off the front chainring. That meant you could run some absurdly large rear gears and still have pretty good shifting - there are now cassettes on the market that go up to 52 teeth!

Bikes are like a cool mix of smart engineering and artistic vibes, all made to give you a smooth and fun way to get around. Whether you're a hardcore cyclist or more of a casual rider, getting to know the nitty-gritty parts of a bike can totally make you go, "Wow, that's awesome!" So, grab a seat, let's dive into the bits and pieces that make up this awesome two-wheeled wonder!
1. Handlebars:
Handlebars serve as the primary point of contact between the rider and the bike. They provide control and stability, allowing the rider to steer and maneuver the bike effectively.
2. Stem:
The stem connects the handlebars to the bike's fork steerer tube. It plays a crucial role in determining the bike's overall riding position and comfort.
3. Headset:
The headset is the bearing assembly that enables smooth rotation between the fork and the frame's head tube. It's essential for steering and maintaining stability.
4. Brake Lever:
Brake levers are mounted on the handlebars and actuate the bike's braking system. When squeezed, they control the brake calipers to slow down or stop the bike.
5. Gear Shifter:
Gear shifters allow the rider to change the bike's gears, adjusting the level of resistance while pedaling to tackle various terrains.
6. Fork:
The fork is the front part of the bike that holds the front wheel. It consists of two blades connected to the steerer tube, providing stability and absorbing shocks from the road.
7. Hub:
The hub is the central component of a bike's wheel, allowing the wheel to rotate around an axle. It contains bearings for smooth movement.
8. Spoke:
Spokes are the thin metal rods that connect the hub to the rim. They help distribute the rider's weight and forces evenly throughout the wheel.
9. Rim:
The rim is the circular outer part of the wheel, providing a surface for the tire to be mounted. It plays a role in supporting the tire's shape and also affects the bike's overall weight.
10. Tire:
Tires are made of rubber and provide traction, shock absorption, and a comfortable ride. They come in various sizes and tread patterns to suit different riding conditions.
11. Frame Tubes:
The bike's frame is made up of several tubes, including the head tube (where the fork attaches), top tube (connecting the head tube to the seat tube), seat tube (holds the seat post and saddle), and down tube (connecting the head tube to the bottom bracket).
12. Crank Arm:
Crank arms are connected to the bike's bottom bracket and pedals. When the rider pushes the pedals, the crank arms rotate, transferring energy to the chain.
13. Bottom Bracket:
The bottom bracket houses the bearings that connect the crankset to the bike's frame. It allows smooth rotation of the crank arms and pedal movement.
14. Derailleurs:
The front and rear derailleurs are mechanisms that move the bike's chain between different gears. They're controlled by the gear shifters and facilitate gear changes.
15. Cassette:
The cassette is a set of multiple cogs on the rear wheel hub. It works in conjunction with the chain and derailleurs to provide a range of gear ratios.
16. Jockey Wheel:
Jockey wheels are small cogs within the rear derailleur that guide the chain across the cassette. They help maintain proper tension and alignment of the chain.
17. Chain Stay and Seat Stay:
These are two parts of the bike frame that connect the rear wheel to the rest of the frame. They contribute to the bike's stability and overall structure.
18. Seat Post:
The seat post is a tube that inserts into the seat tube of the frame. It holds the saddle in place and can be adjusted to set the rider's preferred saddle height.
19. Saddle Rails and Saddle:
Saddle rails are the metal bars beneath the saddle that connect it to the seat post. The saddle itself provides comfort and support for the rider while pedaling.
Knowing what makes up a bike isn't just about being all nerdy about its design – it's also about having the smarts to figure out how to take care of it, soup it up, or give it a personal touch. So, when you jump on your bike next time, give a nod to all the cool moving parts that team up to make your ride smooth and sleek. It's like a symphony of awesomeness! 🚲🥳
