SPOTIFY WRAPPED UP

Thank you all for NOT listening to my music on Spotify! And thanks to all the people that have supported me on Bandcamp! (ps: I do appreciate also those 8 monthly listeners tho!) This is no dig to all the artists/friends that use spotify, you got to do what you got to do, and I hope it works out!

But is important for me to say that I don't think its a sustainable platform for music. Regardless of the petty money it gives to artists*(!), whilst being a multi billion company (thanks to your/our MUSIC ((*which won’t even be the case anymore next year)), the monopoly it already has can’t actually become the future of music “listening”. TO WRUP IT UP: IMPORTANT!!! In case you didn’t know, the CEO of Spotify is also investing in AI weapons now. And is laying off lots of staff (after a very ((if not the most)) profitable year... where does the money go?!). I personally don't and wouldn't encourage/promote it either, and try to redirect to other sources.

When you choose what to boycott, always look at the label right?

There's better alternatives out there… in fact I’d much rather people download my music on soulseek or just listen to it on bandcamp tbh (heck, I think even tidal would be better! Why is there no tidal wraps?!)

(*) For transparency, I made about £14 in 5 years of spotify (only uploading some trax or albums as an experiment, also partly pressured by the whole “you have to be on spotify or you don’t exist" too) yeah well, instead I made about £400 on bandcamp with in a week (with a pay what you want scheme)… Bandcamp of course has its faults too, but for now is a way more sustainable platform for musicians. Anyways, and always, I would still prefer people download our music for free on upitup.com

So.. F**K it, I’m taking arpeologie down, hasn’t really got me anywhere on there anyway (I don’t have control on the other few tracks tho) but I’d rather choose not to have my music on Spotify. I’ll say it again, PLEASE stream my music on bandcamp, download it on soulseek, or even better, its all there on upitup (FREE), or you can also just ask me for direct D/L links! :)

I've slowly been dipping back into radio world after a near 2 year break (sept 2021). Can't remember last time I did a show on my own (maybe the one), looking forward to it.

WOW! What an incredible weekend that was!! What can I say, Africa Oyé truly is a Liverpool (and national!) TREASURE!!!

Had a great time playing and having my girls on stage with me!

NOTE TO SELF: If you're going to show off holding kids and djing at the same time, make sure you check the stage for any hazards, as I did slip on some flyers whilst dancing and holding my 6 year old daughter, and had a big fall and potentially might have broken my foot, but on the plus side I pulled a super daddy move and managed to keep my daughter upright and safe, ALL GOOD! :p

ANOTHER NOTE TO SELF: Don't (ever) post a weather forecast, as I did (partially) jinx it, but was also blessed to have the sky open up and the sun come out during my set. Big ups to everyone who braved the rain on Sunday, was an epic downpour but still so much fun, and Seun Kuti & Egypt80 were phenomenal!!

The story goes something like...: "In 2003, a group of high school teenagers decided to form their own music label.

Apple had just introduced its iPod a year and a half earlier. It was the high times of P2P platforms like Napster and Limewire, when music fans were getting sued by the major labels for sharing music online. That’s why to us, a group of likeminded besties from Stuttgart, Rome and Liverpool, publishing our music for free online was a somewhat radical gesture.

We celebrated the spirit of network culture: long before YouTube or Spotify, Soundcloud or Bandcamp, and even before MySpace was launched, years before the "Like" button was invented and artists were defined by their view count, we explored what it meant to collaborate and publish online.

Upitup Records (from our battlecry "up it up!") served as our medium for musical experimentation and communication with our peers on the internet. OH YEAH!!! 🍻🍻🍻 It's that time of the year again, time for the annual Liverpool Craft Beer Expo! So happy to have been part of the family and play this festival for... 9 or 10 years now?! (hazy memory, the beers are really good!!). Seeing it grow and evolve from Campandfurnace to Constellations to Invisible Wind Factory and finally to its current home at Black Lodge Brewery has been an absolute pleasure!

Always amazing breweries and crazy beers on display! Here's the DJ line-up curated by Melodic Distraction. I'll be playing Friday night from 8pm (after the mighty Keith Marley). If you like beers and tunes it's (obvs) a no brainer (a good combo dat!). Think tickets are running low for Friday so get on it! CIN CIN!

Someone later on said we were running a netlabel (and then actually someone else said we were one of the first ever 100 netlabels). Digging through the archives I came across this Bang Face Takeover myself and Mark Forshaw did on Melodic Distraction Radio on Valentine's Day '19 (official, yeah!), ahead of the Messyside Takeover at Bangface Weekender that year.

I’m really proud of this mix and its still one of my faves! I was playing both on vinyl and CDJs and remember being very nervous before hand, but I’m particularly happy with the mixes and passages here and I think it manages to go from acid to rave to jungle to gabba all rather nicely and smoothly! ;)

I do feel like mixes have quite a short shelf life these days and have become sort of disposable, and since this show was buried under a ton of content and algorithms, I’ve extracted my set to upcycle and archive on my Mixcloud!
