A few bills go into effect today, particularly the AEA bill and the licensure restructuring bill. While we understand that the bill is not perfect, ISHA successfully lobbied for these items in the Boards and Commissions Bill. We are monitoring changes in audiology licensure and will provide updates as we learn more.

Thank you for taking action in March to oppose HB 542, which dismantles Iowa Area Education Agencies (AEAs). Unfortunately, this legislation was revived as HF 2612 and enacted on March 27 despite widespread opposition.

ASHA and ISHA have been monitoring the impact of this new law on audiologists and speech-language pathologists who provide services for children with communication disabilities through AEAs. And we want to hear from you.

A new study published in the journal Brain has identified a specific brain network hub that plays a key role in stuttering. The research, by Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) Associate Professor Catherine Theys, examines two different types of stuttering—developmental and acquired—to show a clear neural basis for the speech condition. https://bit.ly/4ccp5At

A recent study published in the journal Neuropsychologia has found that adults who stutter exhibit lower accuracy in repeating nonword syllable sequences compared to typically fluent speakers. This difference in performance is linked to distinct patterns of brain activity, particularly in regions associated with sensorimotor and auditory processing. The findings shed light on the underlying mechanisms of stuttering. https://bit.ly/3KuBELk

Aphasia affects the ability to comprehend and convey ideas through language. Traditional treatments like speech and language therapy are essential, but researchers and practitioners are exploring new methods to improve outcomes for individuals with aphasia. One such promising technique is repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (RTMS). https://bit.ly/4c7e8jz

Singing can improve language recovery in stroke patients by repairing the brain’s language network. This positive effect is attributed to increased grey matter volume in language regions and improved connectivity within the network. This study suggests that singing can be a cost-effective addition to traditional rehabilitation methods. https://neurosciencenews.com/singing-language-stroke-26124/
