Back to “the Office”…in style.
The day began at 4am, it was a cool 57 degrees. I started the coffee, looked at all the gear that I had so carefully laid out. It all seemed like such a great idea the night before.
Shorts, running bra, watch, shoes, top with number attached with 4 safety pins, hat, sunscreen. Extra water, replenishment gels, protein bar, handkerchief.
I put the lipstick back in my purse. Race day was finally here.
Race day darkness has always had the same quiet quality. Runners park their cars, and quietly make their way to the starting line. Soft voices, as not to wake the world. Once gathered together, voices quickly rise as the anticipation of the sound of the starting gun approaches. We are off and running.
I trained for this day and had set a goal time that I wanted to achieve. Once the race begins, it is hard to contain the adrenaline rush. It is hard to put the genie back in her bottle. By mile 6 my body was telling me that once again I had strayed from my own instructions.
This particular race had used the selling point of a flat, ocean view course but failed to warn me that the hardest 6 miles of the race would be the flat endless ocean part.
At mile 11 my legs started cramping, begging me to slow down. I stopped running. My legs quickly felt like they would fail me completely, as I struggled to gain my balance.
I started to cry, and felt like calling an Uber. As quickly as I stopped, I started again.
I told myself, “you can finish”. So what if you don’t get your time. Who cares about your goal. Its okay to slow down.
Knowing myself, I would have to start another race and finish before the years end, and that thought was an absolute “oh hell no”. I finished the race. I reached the time goal that I set, and felt like I had been run over by a truck. Like most times after I’ve reached a goal, I realize that the journey is where the lesson is most learned. Life is tough, challenging, and awful sometimes. Training for a half marathon is tough, challenging and awful sometimes.
Race day was just the same.
Today I will enjoy remembering the “moments”from yesterday’s race.
Tomorrow I will set a new goal.

We shared a moment…
The evening was filled with music, laughter and anticipation.
Pople were mulling around the artisan booths that were set up along Greenleaf Avenue. The heat of the day had subsided which brought an additional lightness to the day.
I had just finished helping a customer find the perfect gift for her friend who was celebrating her 60th birthday. I sat in my chair to take a little break.
The little blonde-haired girl walked slowly into my booth, her blue eyes taking in all the colors and textures of the display. When she noticed me she instantly froze. Her gaze asked if she were trespassing. As our eyes met she quickly said “Hello”. Her eyes then circled around on her unswiveld head as she continued her absorption of all the colors. When she finally looked from side to side and then back at me she said with her missing tooth smile,
“Your boof is beaful”.
I smiled and said “thank you”.
She reached out to touch a handbag with hesitation and I quickly said,
“It’s okay, you can touch anything you want”.
Her eyes then saw the girls dresses and she starting touching each one, taking time to rub her fingers on all the different fabrics; smiling with delight as if magic was running through her hands.
She suddenly looked back at me, still touching the fabric, with hope in her voice and asked,
“Do you have a size 8?”
I was sorry I did not, but that I would make a note to add a size 8 to my collection.
She continued to touch and run her tiny fingers through the dresses and handbags, then looked straight into my heart and said “thank you.”
We shared a moment together under the tent, both taking in the magic of color, fabric and friendship. She made the night all worth it.

Today I was taken back by the smell of freshly cut grass…
I’m not sure how old I was, or what day of the week. It was evening, and darkness was approaching. The house I grew up in had a lawn that was surrounded by thick ivy. I must have been small because as I lay completely flat, I was completely submerged in the ivy. As I lifted my head I could see my dad being pulled by the lawn mover, intense and unbothered as the green blades of grass were quickly entrapped by the white bucket behind the motor. My two older siblings were prouncing about and I could see my mother sitting on the porch step, beautiful and pregnant with another child.
As I lay in the ivy, I felt happy and alive. So simple, joyful and gratefull. No goals, no expectations, no heartache. Too small to realize that as a human, life would encompass a multitude of emotions both joyful and painful.
I allowed myself the purity of the memory.
The smell of freshly cut grass and the safety of the surrounding ivy.
I took a moment to remember and allowed myself to smile.
Back to work, back to school, or just back. Carry your stuff in style.
I’m so “hot” I gotta have shade.
