Happy Monday! I bought this rosemary plant a little less than a year ago along with a lavender plant. I ignored them and left them for dead because I didn’t think they were growing. Fast forward to this spring when I decided to add more to my bucket garden and this plant was still alive, the lavender, not so much. I cleaned the bucket of grass, refreshed the soil and moved the plant. This summer has been a scorcher, but this plant has blossomed and grown so beautifully I can’t believe it’s the same one. My initial intention was to grow it to make rosemary bundles, but after I didn’t see much growth, I let go of that idea. What I’m holding in my hand is almost enough to make a small bundle, and I can’t be more pleased.

One of the main goals of Mrs. Root’s Spice Salon is to reconnect people with the flavors found in nature. It’s why I don’t add any colors or artificial flavors to any of my blends. I learn from the plants themselves, and use the best ingredients, blending them harmoniously to create layers of flavor. The bounty of the earth and the wisdom of the plants. I wish you could smell this rosemary. It’s Divine.

Have a delicious week, y’all.

This testimonial inspired today’s dinner. I cooked neck bones, Lima beans and rice. No pics because honest, I was so busy today, I forgot. But I snuck some Auntie Dee Dee’s hot chicken blend in my neck bones and I promise you that was the best pot of neck bones I’ve ever cooked in my life. Have a delicious day, yall. What’s for dinner your way?

One of the hardest blends to sell at this point is Auntie Dee Dee’s Hot Chicken Blend. It’s 100 percent my fault because of how I named it but I’m not changing it. It’s not blow your face off hot. It’s a pronounced but sophisticated heat balanced by other flavors to create a luxurious spice experience. Its first name was Hot Chick. Not because it is hot but because it’s bold and delicious and (IMHO) exciting to the palate. I love, love, love these messages because I will never be able to try each blend in every possible recipe, but through y’all, I get to see how well they work in damn near anything. Keep the messages coming!

Cooking helps me feel better. And I’ve been going through a lot personally which often renders me unable to focus. Today, I decided to cook. I was already working on a custom blend so I decided to throw an idea together that’s been swirling around in my head on some chicken thighs. I seared them off and let them rest, then added them to some cavatappi pasta and some vegan Alfredo. Chicken thighs are my favorite piece of yard bird, and these did not disappoint. Not sure if the blend will ever make it to a jar, but it was delicious. I may grill with it in a few weeks. Have a delicious day, y’all!

Restock days are like when I cook a big meal. Even though I’m not smelling actual food, the spice blends smell like food and I don’t have an appetite when I’m done. So tonight for dinner I’m having a peanut butter sandwich with a heavy handed drizzle of local honey, and a heavy handed sprinkle of Shug’s Sweet Potato Pie Spice.

Yesterday when I was getting labels made, the lady in FedEx asked if sweet potatoes was the only thing she could put the blend on. I told her I use it in my coffee, my oatmeal, and in my sweet snacks. Like this. I hope you all have a beautiful evening, and sweet dreams whenever you do slip into slumber.

A blessing that might not sound like a blessing: being low in stock at an event. How is this possibly a blessing, Nikki? Because it means you’ve been getting your hands on the products. It means that my little jars are somewhere else helping you add layers of delicious flavor to your food. It means they’re being loved and used, which is my consistent prayer. I’m grateful, and I’ll be restocking Saturday.

Fueling up before I head to Tatnall Park for Market Day! Come see me, Macon!

Plate pic because I said I would. The bread turned out pretty good if I just say so myself.

I have a confession though. I used a pork and beef blend I got from Kroger and I’m not a fan of I’ve used it a few times in a few different recipes, but it just doesn’t do it for me. I’ll buy them separately and mix them myself if I gotta have that combo.

Other than that, this is a good plate.

Bread and butter. Simple I know. But I’m making spaghetti today, and one of my favorite things at any responsible pasta serving restaurant is the herb infused oil they serve with deliciously crusted bread. I don’t have that, lol. What I have is some rolls that I grabbed on clearance because I’m a sucker for cheap bread, some melted salted butter, and a few hefty spoonfuls of my Savory Garlic and Herb Blend.

Now I know compound butter can be premade and is often not made with salted butter, but I was in a pinch and wanted to be done soon. It’s hot.

I added some fresh rosemary because I grew it, and sometimes, when you grow your own herbs, the flex is using it when you want to because it’s available.

I mixed these ingredients together and used my spoonula to separate the rolls just enough to let the butter run down to the bottom. This is clearance rack bread, after all. I let them get all settled in a 350 degree oven until I could smell the herbs. It’s intoxicating. I can’t describe how good this blend smells when you cook with it. It’s already an amazing symphony of fragrances when you open the jar but something about how it opens up when it’s in action just makes me giddy.

Plate pics later, y’all. Have a delicious day.

One question is get a lot is : are the salt-free spices good. Usually, especially in person, when I tell people I make salt free versions of most of my blends they turn their noses up. Listen, salt-free doesn’t mean flavorless. It doesn’t mean you can’t add your own salt, it doesn’t mean your food will be bland. Quite the contrary. My blends are flavorful, full stop. And I don’t believe you should have to sacrifice flavor to reduce salt. Salt ain’t the only flavor your tongue recognizes. Messages like this let me know that I’m doing good work out here, and I love that for all of us.
