I haven't posted or said anything about the recent unrest in our country because I wanted to be mindful of how I am feeling and how others are feeling at this time.
I have read many hateful comments posted on social media about the recent killing of George Floyd. I think it is a teachable moment for others to see what it is like to be black in America.
Twelve years ago, when I started Raising Great Men, I was one of a few black mothers talking about race, social justice, and the challenges of raising a black son. Although Raising Great Men embraces and welcomes parents from diverse backgrounds, I often wrote personal articles that reflected my truth.
In 2008, my oldest son was in 4th grade and now that he is a young man getting ready to graduate from college, I realize that I have spent more than 20 years worrying about how the world sees my son and how he will be received by others because of his race. I think about the microaggressions and the racist incident he endured in high school.
It saddens me that articles that I have written more than 5 years ago are still a problem today.
This is not a political post, it is a post to to implore other parents of boys to think about what it must be like for black mothers and fathers to send their child out into the world and not have any control over how he is received by others. Think about everything you want for your sons, we want the same. We face many more systemic opposition to achieve the same goals.
Today, I ask you to think about the following and have a conversation about race with your child:
What does it mean to be human?
If we are all human, why are some people's humanity denied?
What privileges are available for certain groups of people but not for others?
What can we do to help groups or individuals who are struggling because of race or ethnicity?

I don't think it's as simple as moms have more biases than dads. You have to take into account cultural differences, experiences, and familial upbringing. I would also think that fear plays a factor too. A mom may fear her son being teased, bullied, or perceived as "weak" by other boys.
