revised its mask guidance today - vaccinated people should (still) be masking indoors! Delta is on the loose and we are again slamming hospital capacity in several states and forsaking our moral responsibility to the vulnerable - LET'S DO BETTER.

Vaccine or not, we should all be protecting others AND ourselves with high-filtration, well-fitting masks when we're breathing in each others' droplets and aerosols. KF94 masks are hard to beat for breathability, consistent quality and cost.

I can’t emphasize this enough. As someone who does extensive risk analysis to capture and predict ways in which complex systems can fail, I will say this: this pandemic has crystallized the weaknesses and disparities that exist in the fabric of our institutions and everyday life. This graphic I made captures some of it, but isn’t entirely exhaustive.
Expect to see more of this type of post where we examine what happens next and what solutions we can leverage, with data!

From the rejection of science and lack of scientific literacy, to the underfunding of public health, health & wealth disparities and inequities in access to healthcare, in America (and the world) some are at a clear disadvantage. Here is the thing, these issues affect us all, even if we were to be at low risk for disease. I’d like for people to understand that risk isn’t insular- we need to view each of our actions as a part of a collective whole and stop trying to tackle complex issues in a way that benefits only a few select individuals, specially those at the top. We will be doomed for failure if we continue to do so. We can’t separate ourselves from society when viewing it. Doing so risks failing to address the root cause of many issues.

Technology has changed and shaped society, for better and for worse. Consistent with that, we need to change the way we educate, communicate and practice science. We need to follow the science, data and evidence,but also keep in mind that not everyone is a scientist and some will only be receptive to the risks that matter most to them. This is the essence of risk communication (and sales for that matter). It doesn’t have to resort to fear, just transparency and clarity. What other lessons can you think of?
