WHAT IS HIDING IN YOUR RIDING?
It's funny where your "stuff" will show up when you're trying to become a better rider.
I really wanted to improve my position in the saddle, so I could see if I could actually ride better on a highly educated horse.
After a warmup, and seeing that I was not entirely hopeless, my teacher asked me:
"why don't you sit up tall when you ride, I can see that you're strong enough?"
"why don't you sit deep in the saddle, you always seem to stand in your stirrups a bit, like you're worried about actually sitting"
And then, the tears.
Seemingly lifelong feelings about being too heavy for the world of horses bubbled up and overflowed.
When you're a size 12, you're already too big for the world of white pants and tight t-shirts.
I thought I was over this stuff, but it shows up in my riding position without me knowing it, embodying the poses of "I am too much".
Although there were tears, this seemed like a really important learning point, and I probably wouldn't have discovered it without getting out of my familiar environment to recognise that change is possible.

Deadlifts DON'T help me to ride better.
I like to lift weights, and I wish everyone was loading their muscles, bones and joints to be fit and healthy, for a lifetime.
I am pretty strong in the gym, and objectively, often pretty rubbish in the saddle. I've seen the photos, there's proof!
Weight training and fitness gives you the raw material to build skill upon, but for the health and happiness of your horse, this is not the strength that helps you dance well together.
Going out to your first dressage outing can feel very intimidating. Getting feedback from the judges seems like a huge pile on to your diminishing self esteem. However once you realise; they are human beings too. Excited about your handshake moment as you come down the centre line to introduce yourself to this moment 😀of possibilities 🐴
