"The future is always beginning now."

-Mark Strand, American poet. From the collection Reasons for Moving.

Scott's Thoughts: Engaging with Now

Uncertainty isn't just a fact of life, it is proof of life. Everything alive changes... sometimes slowly, sometimes suddenly. There are changes we feel in real time and those we only observe in contrast, as when an old photograph from the past surfaces and we marvel at how much was different back then.

We spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about the future. Will the Chinese stock market crash our economy? How long will this drought last? Many of our fears seem to center on things far beyond our control, and yet they occupy a disproportionate amount of our mental energy.

It is strange that we would choose cede control of our mind to conditions we cannot control. This is especially true when there are almost always tangible problems or challenges we could invest our energy in at the present moment.

Take time today to look at your life and ask yourself: What are my real issues? What lies directly before me that I can actually influence? A simple inventory of the real versus the imaginary can have a wonderful clarifying effect on both your to-do list and your mind.

The Closing Word: Maunder

This week we continue our vocabulary-building series, "The Closing Word." Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.

This week's closing word:

maunder
Pronounced: (MON-durr)

Verb:
1. speak (about unimportant matters) rapidly and incessantly
2. talk indistinctly; usually in a low voice
3. wander aimlessly

From Vocabulary.com: "The difference between a great speech and an interminably boring one is that a good speaker keeps it short (and often funny), but a bad one tends to maunder in a mumbling voice. A novelist who tends to have her characters maunder on endlessly needs a skilled editor. Although maunder sometimes also means "wander aimlessly," it doesn't come from the similar meander but probably from a root meaning "to beg."

Example:
"The agent who maunders on in listing presentations, periodically peppering their speech with jargon and acronyms will seldom land the listing."

Small Kitchen? Try These 9 Tips for Making the Most of Your Limited Space 28/08/2018

9 Tiny Kitchen Transformation Tips

Sometimes you have to make do with a kitchen that is hardly more than the inside of a food truck. If you or someone you know is interested in getting more out of the little galley you call home, be sure to check out these tips from Callie Little for Zillow.

Tips include:

1. Donate first: Before moving into your new space, make sure to get rid of all those things you don't need anymore.

2. Think vertically: Vertical storage is a tried-and-true method of using space, and the kitchen holds some unique opportunities for making the most of it.

3. Find beautiful cleaning tools: Skip the plastic and get yourself a classic wooden broom, natural fiber dish brush and a glass soap dispenser.

4. Tap into change: Installing a quality faucet with a pull-down sprayer can make your chores less of a chore.

5. Live the island life: Whether you choose a larger center-of-the-room-style piece or a small butcher-block number, these additions create more counter space and storage, all in one piece.

6. Light it up: Tailor your lighting to the energy you want in your kitchen.

7. Wallpaper accent: Finding a large-scale print will make the space feel larger, and layering a sizable mirror on top will maximize the look and any light.

8. Curate unique displays: One of the best ways to keep an assortment of oddly shaped kitchen items is to dedicate either one section of the room (think: the top 12 inches of the walls) or one wall to showing them off.

9. Keep it alive: Every room deserves a plant.

"You must learn to make the whole world your school."

-Martin H. Fischer, German-born American physician and author.

Scott's Thoughts: Habits vs. Experiments

There are no shortage of books about habits, proof that the subject of habit formation (and reformation!) is endlessly renewable. There's good reason for this. Habits are powerful. And when we say habits can make or break us, we're typically talking about good habits versus bad habits.

But all habits--good or bad--have one thing in common: They become automatic. They short-circuit thought, circumvent willpower, and foster a direct connection to action.

This isn't always a great thing. Why? It deters us from experimentation.

Sometimes a little deviation from our habitual path can introduce us to new experiences with profound upsides. Harvard economics professor Sendhil Mullainathan writes about this in his article for the New York Times, "Why Trying New Things Is So Hard to Do." Sendhil looks at a variety of instances where experimentation yielded valuable results, and points to commonplace examples of non-experimentation in our everyday lives.

Beyond his examples, Sendhil makes the following larger observation: "Experimentation is an act of humility, an acknowledgment that there is simply no way of knowing without trying something different."

While habits help us with the cognitive cost of constant decision making, forgoing experimentation might come with its share of hidden costs. Here are some situations which call for experimentation:

1. Your go-to solution is old. Technology changes. Options open up. If you've had a "tried and true" solution to a problem, even if it works just fine, revisit it and see if you might optimize based on new information.

2. A small experiment might yield profound long-term savings. Your resistance to a generic product or minor compromise is an excellent opportunity to experiment. A cheaper habitual change really adds up.

3. You can't remember why you do something a certain way. If your reasons behind a system, process, or commonplace activity have been forgotten, inspect and experiment.

As you go through your week day, observe when you're making a decision based on habit. What other alternatives are there? How else might you choose? Is this a good time to experiment?

The Closing Word: Inure

This week we continue our vocabulary-building series, "The Closing Word." Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.

This week's closing word:

inure
Pronounced: (in-YOOR)

Verb:
cause to accept or become hardened to; habituate

From Vocabulary.com: "Although the Latin roots of inure mean "in work," it may be easier to think of "in use" when you see inure. Got new shoes that give you blisters? When they are "in use" long enough, your feet will become inured to the spots that rub, and while you may have calluses, you will not be in pain. You can be inured to more abstract things too. When weathermen constantly play up the next big snowstorm or blizzard, you become inured to it and stop paying attention to them."

Example:
"With time, agents become inured to the routine but annoying request to reduce their commission."

As Google Maps Renames Neighborhoods, Residents Fume 21/08/2018

Who Names Neighborhoods in the Internet Age?

Neighborhood names are a touchy topic, especially with developers, real estate agents, and long-time residents of a community. While you might think the name of a neighborhood is controlled by the people who live, work, and play there, the digital age is changing all of that.

A recent article in the New York Times highlights how mapping services like Google Maps can rebrand nei ghborhoods simply through search dominance. According to the piece, "Google Maps has now become the primary arbiter of place names. With decisions made by a few Google cartographers, the identity of a city, town or neighborhood can be reshaped, illustrating the outsize influence that Silicon Valley increasingly has in the real world."

What happens when they get a name wrong? Who makes these decisions? How does Google's footprint influence travel, tourism, and local business identity?

While this piece is lengthy, we think it's worth checking out. And if you haven't looked at neighborhood names in your own market, now might be a good time to see if anything's getting rebranded by the Big G:

"A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving."
-Laozi, Philosopher and poet of ancient China.

Scott's Thoughts: A Trip to the Airport

Have you ever been to the airport when you didn't have a flight to catch? I'm not talking about dropping off a friend or picking up a relative. I mean visiting the airport when you don't have a ticket to fly. Probably not, I'm guessing.

Airports are not known for being relaxing. Stressful? Sure. Exciting? Often, but it depends. How late you arrive, where you're going, why you're there... all of it has an impact on your thoughts, feelings, and stress level. (Imagine a business trip, versus a funeral trip, versus an exotic vacation, for example.)

But when you're at the airport with nowhere to go, the experience is quite different. In this state, you can be an observer, detached, watching the traffic of business and pleasure pass without placing yourself in the center of the bustle. The experience can be surprisingly relaxing.

Our minds can be a lot like airports: Busy, crowded, filled with rules, full of opportunities to hurry up and wait. They're also our gateway to the rest of the world. Our thoughts, emotions, desires, and fears are like the traffic crowding the terminals, security checkpoints, and baggage claim.

Most of the time we engage our minds like a purposeful trip to the airport and find ourselves completely immersed in the anxieties, pleasures, and pains of trying to get somewhere as fast as possible.

What I would gently suggest is using this mental model as a way to help yourself find moments of clarity and stillness in your life. Take five or ten minutes every morning to approach your mind like you might a casual, go-nowhere trip to the airport. Go as an observer of your thoughts and not a fellow traveler.

Sit back and notice. Visit without stress or judgement or intent. Resist the urge to buy a ticket just yet. You might find the practice a way to experience a daily staycation.

The Closing Word: Impuissance

This week we continue our vocabulary-building series, "The Closing Word." Each week we provide a new word to help build your vocabulary and show you an example of how to use it.

This week's closing word:

impuissance
Pronounced: (im-PYOO-ih-since, im-PWIH-since, ahm-PWEE-saunce)

Noun:
powerlessness revealed by an inability to act

From Vocabulary.com: "When faced with a situation when you need to act, sometimes you freeze. That feeling is called impuissance, when you're unable to make a move because you feel like you have no power. Bless the French, because they came up with a single word that means exactly that: impuissance. It literally means "not powerful," and feeling powerless is the key ingredient in impuissance. It's tricky to pronounce, but imagine you're in France and try it this way: im-PWIS-since. You'll feel more powerful in no time."

Example:
"With all-cash, multiple-bid situations eating up inventory, the first-time buyer felt a profound sense of impuissance, and ended up renting for longer than they wished."

The Most Dangerous Writing App 17/08/2018

Let Ideas Flow with The Most Dangerous Writing App

When you're trying to get your ideas down on the screen, it's all too easy to sit there paralyzed by your inability to move forward. Self-editing, doubt, and the fear of writer's block can cause you to seize up.

One trick professional writers use to unlock their idea is unrestrained freewriting. The important thing is not the quality of the ideas spilling forth, but that the ideas get down on the virtual page as fast as possible.

Of course, it's easy to write freely for a while and then choke up again. And that's where The Most Dangerous Writing App comes in. The idea is simple: Once you start typing, you have to keep typing or you'll lose everything you've written. Stop for too long and the screen gradually pulses red, warning you you're about to lose it all!

From the website:

"The Most Dangerous Writing App is designed to shut down your inner editor and get you into a state of flow. If you stop typing for more than five seconds, all progress will be lost. After typing without interruption for the length of your session, you'll be able to save your work."
Sessions begin at 5 minutes, but if you really want to challenge yourself, stretch it out to 10 minutes or more.

You'd be surprised how effective freewriting is for making associative leaps, interesting connections, and digging through complicated feelings. Give it a try:
