Son of a Preacher Man (G6 Mix)

When we’re going through entries for a remix contest, most of the time, our favorites jump out to us pretty quickly. The G6 Mix was done by Damian James of GabrielSix / Tripping Breakers. There was something that jumped out about the G6 Mix. It had this cool synth line in it, and and the whole mix sounded like some sort of noisy anthem, repeating the “Was the Son of a Preacher Man” vocals. As is sometimes the case...hearing the remix made me want to work further with the remix. I (Statik) added some new guitars to the chorus and a few new drum parts and effects. It’s a bit like kaRIN and I work, going back and forth...there’s no reason it shouldn’t be the same for a remix.

Here's what GabrielSix remembers about the remix: "Somewhere around 2000 I saw Collide’s Son of a Preacher Man on musicvideos.com, a website where you could stream music videos, which was AMAZING at the time! It was a fun video and a great take on the song. I was an instant fan!

Fast forward to 2006, I had just put together my first decent studio and was excited to take a crack at the remix. As I recall, we only had the vocal track and BPM to work with, which I thought was brilliant. Instead of considering which tracks to keep, modify or remove, I got to remake the song, which I really enjoyed. Doing this remix had a big impact on how I approached every remix thereafter.

My entry slid in a little after the deadline, but I was just excited to have musicians I admire listen to something I’d done. The original mix wasn’t quite as polished as something I might do today, but the latest additions from Statik and kaRIN have breathed new life into it. I’m quite pleased with how it turned out and honored to be a part of it. Cheers!
