Service providers say addiction services in Kelowna are lacking - Kelowna News 23/11/2019

Services aren't being made readily available for people recovering from opioid addictions; as seen from this article here. Young people in particular are not getting the treatment they need, but many homeless people on Leon avenue are also facing the same blind eye. Recovery facilities are very expensive which is the main concern for these willing-to-be-helped young and old opioid addicts. SHARP is making change through both providing awareness and education on these risks! Alot of news has been on addicts overdosing downtown, but it's the one time users (mainly young users) who are the greatest at risk of an overdose; this population of first time users can become easily addicted aswell. In conclusion, use safely, keep and naloxone kit close, and know the risks of opioids; facilities are there to help, but let's not get to that point.

Service providers say addiction services in Kelowna are lacking - Kelowna News It's been more than three and a half years since B.C. declared a public emergency over the opioid crisis, but Kelowna is still “incredibly under-resourced" when it comes to delivering addiction recovery services.

Teen who died at Kelowna’s Centre of Gravity festival remembered as bright young girl 13/09/2019

Planning on going to FROSH at UBCO? A thought to consider...

Some of you may remember the young girl who died at Kelowna’s Centre of Gravity. Her death was unnecessary and absolutely preventable if COG had deployed drug checking equipment.

FROSH will have drug checking services available this year. Take full advantage and reduce your risk of an overdose!

Attention UBCO FROSH partygoers!

Drugs containing Fentanyl are deadly and commonplace in Kelowna!

IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON CONSUMING DRUGS, HAVE THEM SAFTEY-CHECKED WITH DRUG CHECKING EQUIPMENT AT FROSH. A drug checking tent with state-of-the-art technology is being made available for you at this year's FROSH festival. You will be able to confidentially and anonymously check if your drugs are safe at FROSH'S drug checking tent - judgement-free. Bring your molly, co***ne, or any other drug to the drug checking tent to screen for Fentanyl or other dangerous chemicals.

Both the RCMP and Campus Security support this harm reduction strategy. This means they will not patrol the tent area - they too want to ensure that you stay safe.

AGAIN, IF YOU ARE GOING TO CONSUME DRUGS, WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO HAVE THEM CHECKED.

See you today at UBCSUO Club Expo!

08/09/2019

INFORMATION POST: Hey everyone! As the new semester kicks off, many opportunities for volunteering and getting valuable experience are also becoming available! The SHARP team is asking for YOU to become a member! Come to SHARP at UBCO expo day this coming Wednesday, Sept 11th and get involved with preventing the opoid crisis situation!
~
So what is SHARP and what DO they do to help? UBCO SHARP was created in September of 2018 after a noticeable opioid crisis had developed, and still is developing, locally in Kelowna. The SHARP team are a group of students who are motivated to promote healthy alternatives and prevent risks of overdoses. Drugs are bound to be passed around at parties and festivals, but HOW fatalities can be prevented from occurring is by students becoming educated on how to USE SAFELY.
~
This is where we come in, SHARP members gather once or twice a week, for however long they can, to educate and train students on how to be safe and protected when opioids are inevitably in the possession of students. We dont promote the use of opioids, but if they are present, we promote the safety of how opioids are used. SHARP members will also know how to use naloxone kits to save lives. ~
Quick vital information for everyone reading. Firstly, NEVER use by yourself, secondly NEVER take a large dose or many smaller doses if you think the drug isnt working, and lastly, NEVER use without a nearby naloxone kit.
If an overdose does occur, (calling 911 is the first step above all) people trained by SHARP members and SHARP members themselves know the proper steps to save lives! And this is where we need YOU to help!
~
It's all about spreading awareness of healthy alternatives and preventing risks of overdoses. -SHARP UBCO
