Belgium is known for its high standards of living and quality of life. A recent article in The Economist โ€œ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—น๐—ฑโ€™๐˜€ ๐—ฅ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜ ๐—–๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฏโ€ supports this good reputation. When considering more data than just the GDP per person, Belgium gets an excellent rating, a stunning 6th place worldwide, between Denmark and Switzerland! Letโ€™s see why.

Comparing the wealth of nations is harder than you might think because comparing the dollar income per person does not take into account differences in prices and the number of hours you have to work to earn your salary. To provide a more accurate picture, The Economist has created a global list using three data measures (2022): GDP per person at market rates (dollar income per person), adjusted income for local prices and adjusted for costs/hours worked.

๐Ÿ’ถ While Belgiumโ€™s GDP per person is USD 49,600 (18th highest in the world), it jumps to USD 65,000 (15th) when local costs are considered, and it further increases to USD 72,300 (6th) when adjusted for the hours worked. Much of western Europe follows this trend. Thatโ€™s why countries like Belgium fly up the rankings when their lower cost prices or enviable work-life balance are taken into account.

๐Ÿ’ต Americaโ€™s GDP is the largest worldwide at market exchange rates, its income per person is the 7th highest in the world, 8th when adjusted for local prices, and 11th when weighted for the number of workdays and holiday.

Even if some data may be hard to compare between countries, this ranking provides us with an interesting insight of the countries where money goes furthest for their inhabitants.

Congratulations to Dutch-American Marieke Gouda!

Wisconsin cheese artisans brought home 25 percent of all awards presented at the recent World Cheese Awards in Trondheim, Norway, with Marieke Gouda of Thorp, Wisconsin earning the most awards of any United States competitor.

Organized by the Guild of Fine Food, the World Cheese Awards is global event that brings together cheesemakers, retailers, buyers and food commentators worldwide to judge over 4,000 cheeses from over 40 countries. Now in its 35th edition, 2023 saw a record number of cheeses entered โ€“ 4,502, from 43 countries โ€“ which were judged by an international panel of 264 judges from 38 nations.

โ€œMore than 180 years ago, our ancestors chose Wisconsin because the terroir reminded them of the homes theyโ€™d left behind in Northern Europe, allowing for the tradition of expert farming and cheesemaking to grow and flourish. Wisconsin continues to call to national and international artisans alike, and we are so very proud of the rich, flavorful award-winning cheeses that are produced here,โ€ the Chief Marketing Officer of Wisconsin Cheese and Senior Vice President of Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin said in a press release.

Other winning Wisconsin Cheese producers include The Artisan Cheese Exchange, Sartori Company, Schuman Cheese, Carr Valley Cheese Co., Widmer's Cheese Cellars, and Hoard's Dairyman Farm Creamery.

Efforts to maintain the Achterhoeks dialect!

'Jong eleerd is old edaone', zo leren peuters plat praten Steeds minder jonge mensen spreken de Achterhoekse streektaal.

๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽท Happy Saxophone Day! Letโ€™s take a moment to appreciate the contributions of Belgian inventor Adolphe Sax (born on this day in 1814) to the world of music.

๐ŸŽต Yesterday, Adolphe Sax's hometown, Dinant, welcomed hundreds of saxophonists of all ages. This one-day orchestra offered the audience a varied program ranging from Ravel's Bolero to the Beatles and the Pink Panther. The concert was part of the 8th edition of the International Adolphe Sax Competition of Dinant taking place from October 31 to November 11, 2023.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ The saxophone was originally invented for classical music, but it gained more popularity in the jazz community. In the early 20th century, the saxophone started to become popular in the United States and began its legacy as a prominent part of jazz and blues bands.

In the past 20 years, the Netherlands has doubled the length of its separated cycle path network, which stretches 35,000 km across the country.
