: Escalating violence claims lives, fuels tensions in region

Last week, the Gambela region witnessed a series of violent assaults by ethnic militias, resulting in two tragic deaths and numerous injuries, as reported by residents interviewed by Addis Standard. On 01 February, 2024, an ambulance transporting a patient from town to Gambella city faced gunfire, leading to the death of a police officer escorting the ambulance upon reaching town.

Additionally, on 30 January, armed individuals ambushed a Bajaj vehicle traveling from to the Nuer settlement area, resulting in the driver's death. The assailants, allegedly from the Angwa militant group, targeted the vehicle for transporting essential supplies to Nuer ethnic group members.

These incidents exacerbate a series of violent events in the region, including an assault in July 2023 where three died and 23 were injured near Gambela city, and another targeting a Nuer village that left at least 31 dead and 20 injured, including a Gambela University faculty member.
