In Memoriam: Ross Terrill

Two weeks ago, we lost the brilliant Ross Terrill, a Harvard professor, China expert, and a trusted advisor to some of the world’s most influential figures. His insights shaped the thinking of leaders like Henry Kissinger and Rupert Murdoch, and his writings in The Atlantic guided President Nixon’s historic trip to China. A New York Times bestselling author, Terrill was a man whose opinions were sought after by those in the highest circles of power.

But behind the public persona, Ross Terrill carried a deeply personal secret: his attraction to men. His private life, candidly documented in his diary, is now revealed in Breaking the Rules: The Intimate Diary of Ross Terrill, published by Rattling Good Yarns Press.

It is with great sadness that we report that one of our Rattling Good Yarns Press authors, Ross Terrill, who is the author of Breaking the Rules: The Intimate Diary Of Ross Terrill, passed away on Aug. 2 at his home in Boston. Ross was 85 years old.

Ross Terrill was a political scientist, journalist, and former Harvard professor. Ross's specialty was China, and he accurately predicted the rise of China as an economic power. Henry Kissinger used Ross's articles about China published in The Atlantic to brief and prepare President Nixon for his historic visit to China in 1972.

Ross, who had advised senators, prime ministers, and those in power, had a secret. No one knew that Ross was gay, and for 40 years kept a very intimate diary. When Ross was 82, Rattling Good Yarns Press published his diary, Breaking the Rules, edited by Philip Gambone in 2023

We at Rattling Good Yarns Press felt it was essential to bring the diary to light because, in the past, the actual lives and histories of LGBTQ people have been denied, ignored, and swept under the carpet. Given his political connections and friendships with the powerful, Ross's desire to publish his frank diary and come out so publically was a brave decision.
