Two recent topics of interest for our military and veteran clients are the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) Open Season and increased coverage for Service Members Group Life Insurance (SGLI). Details on each and where to get more are outlined below.
SBP Open Season:
Congress approved a Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) Open Season beginning December 23, 2022, and ending January 1, 2024. This Open Season allows you to change SBP elections you have previously made. Open Season provides two choices -- end or start coverage. Ending coverage will permanently discontinue coverage. Start ("Elect") coverage allows eligible members currently NOT enrolled (declined SBP coverage) to request SBP.

SGLI
Effective March 1, 2023, the maximum amount of SGLI coverage will be increased from $400,000 to $500,000 for $31 per month (including $1/month for TSGLI). All eligible service members will be automatically insured including those who previously declined or reduced coverage. The new premium will be deducted from base pay.
