kar.ma LIVING Nepal
The latest initiative of kar.ma COFFEE together with it's NGO partner @Roots for Life (RfL) has started training women in carpentry, taking a bold step into unchartered territories in Nepal. This is aimed to kickstart a vocational training center, which will eventually be the CREATIVE side of the social business - working with new product design and keeping the kar.ma line fre
sh and dynamic. All costs of the initial phase of the establishment of the training center are covered by Roots for Life and managed by kar.ma COFFEE. @Carola Gosch's and @Birgit LIenhart's vision is to empower women to generate their own income either at kar.ma LIVING or outside, while upgrading traditional knowledge with a modern twist. Follow the stories of the four bold women from Khokana who have taken this bold step, and of a journey how to start a business with a cause from scratch. We will document it every step of the way - give it some love, a pat in the back, some constructive criticism, and an occasional hug. The STORY
The principles behind Karma Coffee mandate working with producers all through the coffee chain, getting more and more small producers benefiting from the social business. Its worked pretty well so far, and apart from stakeholders directly involved in the coffee process, we engage with a host of other producers. Recently, we realized that it is really difficult to get workers who are passionate about trying new designs away from the traditional style and workers who have the knowledge of modern techniques and equipment. Many designs stayed in the ‘ideas folder’ and got dusty. Carpentry is a very male dominated, dirty field of work – most think. BUT, why not training women working with wood and changing that image? With help of SABAH Nepal and Roots for Life, kar.ma coffee selected four young amazing women from Kokhana for a training period of 5 months. They will later be absorbed into the initiative, earning full time as prototype developers / trainers / producers. kar.ma coffee is proud to be working with these amazing young women. Bold, strong, with character.
