RUSSIA 2018 UPDATE: Uruguay has drawn 0-0 with Argentina to remain in third place in South American qualifying, while Argentina is teetering in 5th.
France has also helped their qualification chances, routing a helpless Netherlands 4-0, while Bulgaria, Luxemborg, Hungary, Portugal, Switzerland and Cyprus all recorded wins. Belgium recorded a huge 9-0 win over minnows Gibraltar to boost their bid to play in Russia next year.
Meanwhile, overnight, Japan has sealed their place in Russia, beating Australia 2-0.
CONFIRMED: Luis Suarez has recovered from a knee injury and will start against Argentina in 35 minutes time.
TRANSFER NEWS: Barcelona have completed the signing of Ousmane Dembele for a reported fee of 105 million Euros.
The Premier League is now well and truly underway! Week 2 action began with Manchester United thrashing Swansea 4-0, while Liverpool, Leicester and West Brom all recorded wins. Stoke City also had a memorable night, upsetting Arsenal 1-0 thanks to a goal from new signing, Jese.
Week 2 action continues tonight with Huddersfield taking on Newcastle and Tottenham taking on Chelsea.
More European and Copa America action completed today! In Euro 2016, Poland held off a resilient Northern Ireland outfit, with Lewandowski being relatively well contained by the Irish side. But where you stop one, another takes his place, and Arek Milik had the sole goal of the match in the 51st minute.
Expectantly, Germany also won their first Euro 2016 game, beating Ukraine 2-0, with Mustafi opening the scoring 19 minutes in from a Toni Kroos assist, while captain, Bastian Schweinsteiger, capped things off at the death from a pass by assist king, Mesut Ozil.
Heading to South America, the Copa America Centenario provided yet another controversy as Peru outgunned favourites Brazil 1-0, with a Raul Ruidiaz goal 75 minutes into the game being the lone addition to the scoresheet. However, replays from the goal showed it was a blatant handball, and with Brazil needing a draw to progress to the quarter finals, the 1-0 loss sees them become the second heavyweight team to drop out of the tournament, following behind Uruguay.
Earlier, Ecuador had played Haiti to secure their advancement into the quarter finals, and it was all routine for the South Americans as they came out 4-0 winners. Enner Valencia started things off for Ecuador, scoring 11 minutes into the match, before Jaime Ayovi added to their lead 9 minutes later. The second half saw more of the same, with Noboa nabbing the third in the 57th minute, whilst Luis Valencia sealed the match 78 minutes in. As a result, Peru and Ecuador will now qualify for the quarter finals, where Peru will take on Colombia, while Ecuador will play the USA.
That’s all for today, tomorrow will see more Euro 2016 and CAC action, with Ireland taking on Sweden, and Belgium taking on Italy, while in South America, Mexico and Venezuela will play to determine who takes first in group C, and Uruguay and Jamaica will play in a match of little significance to both sides.
Full time in the first Euro 2016 matchup as well as in the second games for the Copa America Centenario Group D teams.
In the France vs Romania match, the hosts made a good impression, coming up 2-1 winners against a resilient Romanian line-up. In what was a close first half, neither side could break the deadlock, leaving both teams scoreless at the break. However, the second period proved to be full of action, with Arsenal star, Oliver Giroud, scoring in the 57th minute, only for his goal to be cancelled by Romania’s Bogdan Stancu in the 65th. The game continued in deadlock for most of the second half, with an intense ending giving France the victory after Dimitri Payet latched onto a ball from Leicester star N’Golo Kante, leaving France with a 2-1 victory after his 89th minute goal.
Meanwhile in the Copa America Centenario, the first game of the night saw a controversial victory given to defending champions, Chile. Like with France vs Romania, the Chile vs Bolivia game had no goals in the first half, with Arturo Vidal scoring the first of the match just moments into the second half. 61 minutes into the game and again the scores were level, with Bolivian forward, J. Campos, equalising. However, with the 90th minute mark approaching, the referee indicated 8 extra injury time minutes to be played, though the game went two minutes over his allotted time, and a penalty to Chile in the 110th minute had effectively sealed the result, with Arturo Vidal scoring again.
In the second Copa America Centenario game of the night, Argentina comfortably routed a ten-man Panama squad, outgunning them 5-0. Messi, fresh from injury, was left on the bench for the first period, though it mattered little for Argentina, with Otamendi scoring 7 minutes into the match after an Angel Di Maria assist. However, the reminder of the half saw no more goals, despite Anibal Godoy being sent off for Panama 32 minutes in. The second half saw a different story however. Messi was introduced in the 62nd minute, and made it 2-0 to Argentina 6 minutes after his arrival. In the 78th minute, he added his second, making it 3-0 to La Albiceleste, before converting his hat-trick in the 87th minute. Sergio Aguero finalised proceedings in the 90th minute, rounding up the 5-0 win.
After today’s action, Argentina have qualified for the quarter finals of the Copa America Centenario, while a win for Chile over Panama in match day three will see them qualify too. However, if Panama are able to beat the Chilean favourites, they’ll qualify instead.
Next, we return to Euro 2016 action, with Albania taking on Switzerland, then Wales playing Slovakia, followed by England facing Russia and lastly Turkey doing battle with Croatia. In the Copa America Centenario, tomorrow sees USA play Paraguay and Colombia play Costa Rica, in what will be the third and final Group matches for Group A. Both fixtures are must wins for all teams bar Colombia, who have already sealed qualification, so the fight will be for that precious, second place spot.
And that’s full time here! Mexico have officially eliminated both, Uruguay and Jamaica from the Copa America Centenario after a 2-0 win over the Jamaicans. Mexican star Chicharito opened the scoring with his head 18 minutes into the game, before Oribe Peralta ended the proceedings in the 81st minute, effectively allowing both, Venezuela and themselves to qualify out of group C. The final match up in under a week between the two table toppers will determine who finishes the group stage on top.
That wraps up proceedings for the Copa America for today. Tomorrow sees Chile play Bolivia and Argentina take on Panama, in match ups which could also see further eliminations.
Tomorrow also sees the beginning of Euro 2016, with hosts France playing Romania, followed by Albania taking on Switzerland hours after.
Full time in Philadelphia! Venezuela have defied their odds and will progress through to the quarter finals of the Copa America Centenario after beating Uruguay 1-0, leaving them almost certainly eliminated from the competition.Uruguay started the match strong with several attacking plays in the opening quarter but neither side could fully find a rhythm in a match. Uruguay had a close chance midway through the first half with a Ramirez strike being saved down low by Venezuelan keeper Hernandez. But the breakthrough came moments later at the other end, when a spectacular half way strike by Venezuela’s Penaranda caught Uruguayan keeper Fernando Muslera off his line, prompting a makeshift save that hit the crossbar and landed right in the path of Salomon Rondon, who put it past the helpless Muslera with ease to leave Venezuela 1-0 up at half time.
The second half appeared no different, with Uruguay pressing forward in attack, trying to grab a crucial equaliser. Cavani had the best chance in the dying stages of the game, shooting just wide, but it wasn’t to be for La Celeste. They now sit in last place in group C and only have a mathematical chance to progress to the next stage. Other than that, they’re practically done for the tournament.
Momentarily, Mexico will take on Jamaica in the other Group C game, where a Jamaican win is the only possible result that would keep Uruguayan dreams alive.
Comeback kings! Today’s Copa America Centenario games featured the Group B teams facing off. In the first game of the night, Brazil took on Haiti, where the South American giants routed the Central American minnows 7-1 in what was a scintillating display. Phillipe Coutinho kicked off proceedings in the 14th minute, adding a second 10 minutes later before Renato Augusto scored the third 35 minutes in. After the break it was more of the same for Brazil, with Gabriel making it 4-0 in the 59th minute, before Lucas Lima made it 5-0 minutes after. Haiti brought one back in the 70th minute, but it was only a consolation as Augusto netted his brace in the 86th minute, before Coutinho completed his hat-trick just before full time to ensure that Haiti has no hope of qualifying from the group stage.
In the second game today, Ecuador fought from 2 goals down to salvage a draw against a determined Peruvian side. Peru started off strongly, scoring in the 5th minute through Cueva, before Edison Flores made it 2-0 8 minutes after. Peru looked comfortable throughout most of the first period, but Enner Valencia sparked the Ecuadorian revival, scoring in the 39th minute to send the teams into the break with the score at 2-1 to Peru. After the break, Ecuador continued their fightback, with Miler Bolanos scoring moments after play resumed, thus levelling the scores at 2-2. Both teams pushed for the remainder of the game, but even a late red card to Ecuador’s Gabriel Achilier couldn’t shift the score line.
As it stands, Haiti are indefinitely unable to progress past the group stage, but Brazil, Peru and Ecuador still holding hope to progress. Brazil and Peru now sit equal atop the group with four points apiece, the former holding onto first with a +6 goal difference after routing Haiti. Ecuador sit in third place after drawing in both games thus far, though progression is still possible if they beat Haiti on Monday.
That wraps up today’s games. Tomorrow will see Uruguay try to salvage their Copa America Centenario hopes when they take on Venezuela, while Mexico will try to extend their lead atop group C when they play Jamaica.
Colombia have replaced America atop of Group A of the Copa America Centenario with a strong showing against Paraguay. The second game of the group today, showed plenty of promise and plenty of class, with Carlos Bacca opening the scoring only 12 minutes into the match. Colombia’s talismanic midfielder, James Rodriguez, doubled Los Cafeteros’ lead on the half hour mark, sending them into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Paraguayan coach Ramon Diaz brought on Jorge Benitez and Victor Ayala at the half time interval, hoping to provide a comeback, while Jose Pekerman brought on Guillermo Celis to provide a fresh pair of legs on the 58th minute mark. The Paraguayan substitutions paid off midway through the second half, with Victor Ayala bringing back a goal in the 71st minute.
However, the Paraguayan revival seemingly halted from then on, with Oscar Romero receiving a yellow card in the 79th minute and then another in the 81st, leaving his team with 10 minutes to play, and only 10 men on the pitch. A fairytale ending wasn’t to occur for Paraguay however, the team going down 2-1 to the Colombians, who now sit atop Group A on 6 points, with America trailing them on 3, whilst Paraguay and Costa Rica sit outside the qualification zone, both on one point. Only one match remains for each of the Group A teams before the knockout phase of the competition begins.
The next match will be played in under a day and will feature the Group B teams Brazil and Haiti, with Ecuador taking on Peru afterwards.
Full Time! America have routed Costa Rica 4-0 in their second Copa America Centenario game, with a convincing match played. Clint Dempsey kicked things off for the hosts, scoring a penalty 9 minutes into the game, before assisting Jemaine Jones in the 37th minute, then further adding an assist to Bobby Wood just before the break. The second half took a quieter tone, with Graham Zusi rounding up the proceedings for the USA with a goal in the 87th minute. America now sit atop their group on three points, though that will change, no matter what the result is between Colombia and Paraguay in 20 minutes.
Outgunned! La Albiceleste have held off defending champions Chile in their opening Copa America Centenario group game with a 2-1 win. Without their talisman Messi, Argentina were unable to break the deadlock before halftime, with Angel Di Maria scoring the opener in the 51st minute, before assisting the second goal. Chile brought a goal back just before full time, but it wasn't to be, and the Argentines secured a strong win in their opening Group D match.
La Celeste were comprehensively beaten tonight in the Copa America Centenario from before the match even began. The officials had played the wrong anthem and left the Uruguayans to stand, humiliated and bemused. The organisers issued an apology, though many believed that it was a complete sign of disrespect.
From then on, their match only worsened, conceding an own goal 4 minutes in, before midfielder Vecino was shown his second yellow of the game just before the half time interval.
Uruguay sparked a revival in the second half, showing promise and prowess in attack, and hope only grew when Guardado was sent off for Mexico, with Godín scoring from the resulting free kick. Though it wasn't to be for the Uruguayans, who conceded two late on in controversial decisions, going down to el Tri 3-1 in Arizona.
Tempers frayed, and several times the referee was swarmed by Uruguayans in protest of his decisions.
Now, Uruguay will look forward to their next game in 4 days time against CONMEBOL counterparts Venezuela , while Mexico will look to further their lead atop group C with a game against Jamaica.
