Celebrating the Students of Rosemarie Beck: Wendy Fulenwider Liszt❄️
received her MFA in Painting from in NYC in 2017, where she was also granted the Fellowship. Previously she studied for two years. Recent exhibitions include "Inside Out" at in Boston and "Sanctity" at Thomas Hunter Projects in NYC. She has participated in the Artist in Embassies Program in Tunisia, the Art Fair in NYC, and in Berlin. Wendy makes painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing in studios in both Somerville, MA and Brooklyn, NY.  . . . . . .
"I was a student at New York Studio School on Friday evenings in the spring of 1998, then I studied there full time from fall of 98 through spring of 2000. There were many evening drawing classes, and the ones with Mercedes [Matter] and Rosemarie are clear in my mind. Rosemarie often wore her long hair pulled back from her face, and I saw a passion in her eyes. She and Mercedes would weave in between our drawing horses, speaking to and of each other, interjecting comments about the students' work. I felt a distinct pride that in a crit with an audience of mixed classes, they both agreed that the belly of the n**e in my drawing had weight."

While recovering from surgery and Covid, I took a closer look at some of my grandmother’s early collage works. This one especially intrigues me, because it contains a line of music, which appears to have been torn from a ‘cello part.
My grandmother played violin, and performed with the Woodstock String Quartet during the 1950s, which is likely when she created this collage, which measures roughly 14x11 inches.
Any ideas as to what piece this line may have been excerpted from? Note the frequent pizzicato!!

This morning, I had my appendix removed, so I am celebrating by sharing some small sketches that my grandmother made of me during the early 1980s❤️I didn’t give her the chance to do much sketching when I visited, as I tended to be in constant motion! She gave me Nutterbutters and showed me how Dürer created crosshatching in his etchings. We sketched from her books on Velasquez, while Robert smiled and read his books. Heaven💗

Enjoying my visit to Portland, ME for the annual conference, where I presented my research on small museums yesterday! Put me in mind of my grandmother’s visits to Cape Porpoise in the early 1970s, when she excited these lovely sketches. (The chunk of the Berlin Wall by the Portland waterfront predated these visits, of course)

McCandliss received his BFA in fine arts from and then he studied painting at the where he met Rosemarie Beck. He also studied graphic design and photography at The School of Visual Arts. 
is an art direction team that combines innovative typography and conceptually-driven fashion photography to create award-winning editorial design. Trevett is the Creative Director of McCandliss and Campbell. Together they have received more than 300 design, photography and illustration awards , The Type Directors Club, , Print’s Regional Design Annual, How International Design Awards, Annual, Communication Art Typography Annual, and They won a German Design Award for Excellence in Communication Design. Trevett was the Vice President at The Society of Publication Designers from 2020-2021 and now serves on the advisory board.
Even with his busy schedule, Trevett still finds time to paint!
About Rosemarie Beck, he says: “After I finished a year at the NYSS we kept in touch and would go to the museum together. Towards the end of her life I actually visited her [in her studio] at what is now the [Rosemarie Beck] foundation.
Rosemarie taught us that composition was the “putting-togetherness” of things. She would also say, “never form, but forming.” These ideas came from somewhere deep down in her and resonated with something deep down in me.”

Celebrating the Students of Rosemarie Beck: Ada Pullini Brown🌠
was born in Queens NY, earned a B.A. in Studio Arts from where she studied painting with Rosemarie Beck. She attended Bernard Pfriem's Lacoste School of the Arts, and earned an M.F.A. from the
Ms. Brown has been an artist-in-residence and worked at Bob Blackburn’s printmaking studio in NYC. She worked for the art historian, Barbara Rose on the Journal of Art and for Thea Westrich Art Advisory Service. She participated in three atelier programs and special portfolio projects in LA. Her work is in many private collections throughout the U.S., Mexico, Italy, France, Germany, and Japan. Public collections include the Visual Arts & Crafts Academy of Germiston, Johannesburg, South Africa, and the Prints & Drawing Collection.
From 1995-2016 Ms. Brown was the Director of ArTravel, the Summer Abroad Program, bringing artists and students to paint with her in Europe. She is a retired Professor of Painting and Drawing and maintains an exhibition studio at the Brewery Artist Complex in LA, where she continues to be a participant of the Brewery Artwalk.
“I studied painting with Rosemarie Beck at Queens College. I had never met a woman who was so brilliant, erudite, and powerfully in command of the language of art. I knew I wanted to be just like her. She changed my life, first by demonstrating that a woman could be an artist. As students we hung on to every word she said and worked extra hard to prove we were worthy of her teaching. She taught me the discipline and joy of working. She encouraged us to travel to visit the great museums of Europe. She taught me to be brave, to seek my own voice no matter what the art world movement du jour was. She once told our class that she heard her teacher’s voice in her head when she painted. And I must say of all my teachers, it is her voice I still hear as I paint.”

Celebrating the Students of Rosemarie Beck: Rebecca Dolinsky🪻
earned her BA at Amherst College, was an exchange student and then studied for 5 years, where she studied with Rosemarie Beck. Dolinsky’s paintings and sculptures have been shown in NY by and and in Berlin. The installation je possède LE LOUVRE at the infozone in Paris included the participation of Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy and Georges Didi-Huberman. Delivering the Mail: For Jacques Derrida appeared as part of DE-COR-INSTANZ: DECONSTRUCTION, INSTALLATION, ORENSANZ at in NY. The films Venus in Fur and The Desiring Machines were shown at Paris Underground Film Festival and at the Strip Film Festival.
Dolinsky has taught at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon and has been published in Vacarme. She has worked with the Magnetic Laboratorium for the performances Paris Action and M9 Colors in NY. Her artist's books include “Please, Louise” published by SANZO KUHNAM with a book signing at Le PALAIS DE TOKYO. PATIENT was part of CURE at the Paul Brousse Hospital, and “Finn Again Begin Again” from the Round Library travelled as part of the collection of Leo Koenders' James Joyce Unique Books, of note to the Neue Sachsische Galerie Chemnitz and to the State Archives of Ludwigsburg, Germany.  Dolinsky performed I PHONE at the Nice Institution and participated in the fashion show QQQOC event #1, Don't Mop It, Wear It, at the gallery LA B.A.N.K. She has lectured on her work at the meetings of the and at the Culture and Industry Conference organized by the Descartes at the Arts et Métiers Museum. She reenacted Colette for International Women’s Day at the Currently working on a book of her books, Dolinsky holds a salon for women in the arts on Thursday AMs at in Paris.
“Rosemarie Beck was my teacher at The [NY] Studio School. I took the class she taught with Mercedes Matter and Charles Cajori. Rosemarie was an inspiration. She was a wonderful artist and teacher.”

Celebrating the Students of Rosemarie Beck: David Amdur🎷

David Amdur is a painter based in St. Paul, MN. He received his BA from and his MFA from where he studied with Rosemarie Beck, Gabriel Laderman, and Robert Birmelin. He also studied with Beck at He received an Andy Warhol scholarship for where he studied figure drawing.
Amdur says, “Becki’s emphasis on resonance of color, on movement and interval, were important formative influences in my work.”
Beck wrote: “David Amdur is the kind of student who is a serious prod and provocation to this teacher. He fights for his position, holds his ground. He makes immense demands, on himself, as well, and never settles for easy or acceptable solutions. Withal, he’s candid, warm, open, emotionally balanced, generous, unaffected and EAGER! It’s as if by reaching for the theme he comes into recognition of the need for language - not just any language, but the appropriate language, which he must literally carve like clothespins before the laundry dries on the ground.”
Amdur’s work centers human interaction, which he has explored in series of paintings including children at play, musicians, interaction with nature, and social and political subjects. He has been drawn lately to painting musicians, who for him epitomize creative strength.
“I feel a good painting is a lot like a musical composition. It builds dramatic force with contrasts and harmonies. But instead of tones and rhythms, the elements are colors, shapes and space. I often think of a piece of music as leading me on a journey, and paintings do that, too. A painting can be configured so that when you’re looking at a particular part, another part in your peripheral vision struggles for attention. This creates energy in the experience of looking.”
Amdur’s work has been shown Minneapolis; Raymond Avenue Gallery; JCC Cap Center, St. Paul, Minnesota State Fair, Vem Carver Gallery, Art in General, NY, Bowery Gallery NY. He contributes regularly to the Art Crawl every October.

is an NYC-based visual artist, who received her MFA from where she studied with Rosemarie Beck. Shapiro creates handcrafted relics that infuse the aesthetics and ethos of the ancient and contemporary. Her work combines classic motifs with cultural influences from around the world. Each piece is spontaneous, diverse, and one of a kind. Her work consists of paintings, mixed media prints, and jewelry imbued with a primitive yet refined elegance and reflect the dualities of nature and culture. Taking an artistic and painterly approach to her design work, both her jewelry and artworks influence one another and are developed in tandem. Shapiro has shown with and is a member of the .council; ; the Greene County Council on the Arts; ; ; and the Mamaroneck Artists Guild.

On her art: “I work primarily in a variety of 2-dimensional media including egg tempera, gouache, watercolor and drawing. I am printmaking in lithography, etching, collagraph, solar etching, and monoprints. One of my other passions is to work in collage and assemblage mostly in the form of boxes. I also work in metal making one-of-a-kind jewelry.”

On her former teacher: “Becki was my professor at Queens College from 1974-1978. She was wonderful to me. When I was 19, she gave me a tutorial for my first trip to Europe and asked me if i had enough money. I have never forgotten this.”

Celebrating the Students of Rosemarie Beck: Dov Talpaz 🍁

is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. At age 22, Talpaz moved to NYC to study painting with artists Mercedes Matter and Rosemarie Beck. After Beck’s death in 2003, Talpaz worked at her friend Paul Resika’s studio for seven years. Matter, Beck, and Resika were all important influences on Talpaz’s evolution as a painter. Since that time, Talpaz has engaged in many painting collaborations with colleagues, co-creating the painting group “Painting in New York,” which exhibited biannually for twelve years.
In his show The Sound of Longing, which opens on October 20th, Talpaz proposes a brand new series of works that revolve around the feeling of longing. Longing intended as a testament to our capacity to feel deeply and to imagine beyond the present. In these new works, longing is never expressed literally. Rather, through an extraordinary combination of facial expressions, color combinations, vast empty areas, and scenes of people engaging in communal activities. 
Art historian, curator and writer writes of Talpaz: "Dov is a romantic storyteller in his painting – even contemporary life (he paints on the street as well as in the studio), becomes timeless, universal meditations on humanity. The bodies are lyric, lilting forms, equal parts Duccio and Bob Thompson, set in darkly-layered, abstracted landscape grounds."
Talpaz on his art: "after you finish [the painting], you know you were there, in that moment. I was that person, walking in that place. I wasn’t lazy. I was connected to something. It’s not about the thing. I don’t think a still life in itself means that much to me. But, as a kid, the experience of trying to draw or paint it meant a lot. It felt the most real of anything I had done. Connecting with the drawing, to what I was looking at, was the one experience I loved."

Celebrating the Students of Rosemarie Beck: Melissa Harris🍄
is an author and psychic artist. She got her MFA from where she studied with Rosemarie Beck, who encouraged her interest in divination in relation to Art. A Fulbright Grant recipient, Melissa is devoted to imagery that celebrates life, love, beauty, nature and magic. Her colorful and emotionally evocative imagery is offered by her company CREATRIX. Melissa’s divination card deck - Anything is Possible - uses her own artwork, and her work is also featured on the “Goddess on the Go” deck. Her memoir "Painting Outside the Lines" interprets connections between creativity and spirituality. Melissa is known for her Spirit Essence Portraits –unique paintings that combine her artistic and psychic abilities. Melissa leads art workshops in Ireland and in the Hudson Valley. Her original paintings can be found in private and public collections, and her work is represented by galleries in NY, Florida, and Maine.
Melissa says, “I have been painting and drawing for as long as I can remember. If enough time passes where I have been taken away from my work I become grouchy and anxious to get back to it. I find my inspiration in nature, travel, personal relationships, and dreams. Whatever my subject matter is, I like it to have a certain “edge”. This may be purely compositional and/or it could be emotional. I like to think that a key word for my work, whatever format it takes could be “depth”; depth of space and depth of emotion. My interests change and I need to be deeply connected to what I am working on. This pertains to mediums and sizes as well. Some days I am drawn to oils, other days when I have less energy I will work in watercolor. I love the freedom of moving from one to another with music as a constant inspiration.“
On her teacher, Rosemarie Beck: “She was a special woman- wonderful at passing on inspiration and love for the world of art. She taught me so much that I continue to incorporate into my paintings. I can always hear her voice in my head and her enthusiasm. I keep a photo of her on the wall in my studio.”

In 1983, Rosemarie Beck received a residency at the Bellagio Center in Italy, where she spent four weeks that October. Here are excerpts from her journal for October 16th, and a couple pages from her 8x5” sketch pad for that month.

Oct. 16 I got caught on my “important” motif by rain + moved under garage where I spent the P.M. mouldering + damp + relatively happy. trick is to find places protective of rain. Still, there are some things I can do indoors. For example: myself as a record.
I’m spending a certain quantity of time on my appearance. Which is to say I try things on + worry about what scarf? I think I’ll be able to get through the month without working my serious clothing….
I love palimpsest quality of the fruit here and flowers + bushes and vines. There is an air of history to every plant. It survives by what seems pure effort + supreme good will. I discovered a walnut tree in my garden. And they are delicious. I’m drying several right now….
The dog was tied up all day. I heard him howling like a mournful wolf…. I could get him to smile + give a paw.

The name Neil Lane is synonymous with red carpet glamour, gems and jewels but before came to Hollywood, he was - and still is - an artist. The Brooklyn native studied with Rosemarie Beck at in the 1970s, and modeled for several of her Orpheus paintings. He also exhibited at before moving to LA and establishing
For 25 years, Lane has spent almost every night and weekend in his art studio. He kept in touch with his former teacher in a very special way, supporting a vital aspect of her art practice.

“When I moved to LA I went to all these flea markets and indoor swap meets and house sales. I would find bundles of these silk threads that were never used still in their old wrappings and I would send them to Rosemarie all the time. I used to sit at the kitchen table as Becki grilled some hamburger meat on the stove. Robert was there as well and we'd eat dinner together, afterwards we would just sit and chat while Becki sewed away. I have many of these embroideries and was always fascinated by the luminous colors… I would send hundreds [of bundles of threads] at a time.”

In addition to designing jewelry for Hollywood stars, Lane also designs ketubahs, Jewish wedding contracts. He described this artistic practice, in relation to his work as a painter and jewelry designer:
“To be an artist, there is a spirituality and a trust in the universe and a trust in what you do. There’s a faith involved…. I grow flowers, and florals are a constant inspiration. Also sparkle and glamor — one of the ketubahs is very iridescent. And I work abstractly with colors, metals and metallics. The facet of the diamond has a geometricity in it, and the metallic design is a very triangular abstraction of diamonds. So in my imagination I try to bring all of that to what I’m doing.”

Pam Krimsky grew up in Brooklyn, NY. After completing her MFA at where she studied with Rosemarie Beck, she moved to the Hudson Valley to paint from the landscape. During this time, she established herself as a painter and taught K-12 art classes. She also taught studio courses and art history as an adjunct at

In 1991, Krimsky moved to Iran with her then-husband, the late artist Ali Jabardzadeh, a fellow student of Beck’s at Queens. In Iran, she continued to paint, while teaching English and Art classes. Later, she and her husband were hired to open a fine arts department at a government university, where she taught in Farsi. She also corresponded regularly with her former teacher.
In a letter from early 1996 to Beck, Krimsky wrote: “We’ve hung the sketch you gave us up in our living room, in a place where the light is good, and I enjoy looking at it tremendously and find it is very useful to me now when I am thinking about composing.” Sending a small piece of her art to her former students - laboring to teach and paint in a provincial Iranian art school - was the kind of loving, teacherly gesture that will be familiar to Beck’s “children.” In homes and studios around the world, her presence - embodied in small paintings and homemade holiday lithographs - beams over her students forevermore.
Since 2007, Krimsky has been based stateside in the the Hudson Valley. Her work is currently in the group show “Figure This”, at the in London.

Brian Chu immigrated to the US from Taiwan in 1981. He earned his MFA in painting from where he studied with Rosemarie Beck. He has been a Professor at UNH since 2000, teaching painting, drawing and printmaking. A recipient of the Clowes Fellowship at and the Milton & Sally Avery Residency Award at Byrdcliffe, Brian was awarded residencies in France, Spain, Canada, Maine, and New Hampshire. He has exhibited in New York City, California, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and throughout New England.

Back in his art student days, Brian enjoyed the unique experience of accompanying his teacher on her frequent museum visits around NYC. In one such visit, likely to the Met, Brian and his wife and fellow artist Shiao-Ping were treated to a classic Beck experience. In her 1987 journal, she faithfully recorded this day’s “teachings”, which were probably delivered with expansive gestures and zero filter!! Rosemarie Beck did not have an “inside voice” - her early training in the theater never left her, and was an integral element in her personal and pedagogical delivery style.
“At museum with Shiao Ping + Brian Chu mostly looking at Renoirs. Impression as a style gave a privilege of greater complexity to the painter. In subtle envelope of light many forms can develop + many implications. Enthusiasm analogizing + hands on - my method.” Now imagine these words joyously declaimed in staid museum galleries - IYKYK😉
In regards to his own works, landscapes which achieve an electric gravitas through flame-like strokes and subtly sensual meetings of nature and figures, Brian notes that "a kind of negotiation occurs in painting between what I see and what I decide to put on canvas. The visual sensation supplied by the external world -- the light, colors, shapes, and textures of things -- inundate my vision. The greatest bliss comes when a new way to see the world start to emerge in paint and color on my canvas, and I become a part in that process of forming.”

The Spanish born NYC based artist has prompted in her immersive installations multi-layered sensory experiences, utilizing diverse approaches, from the smell of burning wax and music to architectural elements and engineering problem solving. Throughout her body of work which includes besides installation, drawings and paintings, she has been exploring notions of space and time by engaging with ideas on architecture and light. “I love orchestrating an experience for the viewer by activating an existing space or designing a separate enclosure.”

Valado studied at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios, Madrid, (where she studied with Rosemarie Beck in 1989), and in Maine (‘89, ‘21). At Queens, Valado was exposed to a formalist approach to art - which Beck likely espoused and taught - which she (Valado) later disavowed in favor of a post-modern discipline that is well-suited to her multifaceted artistic goals. However, when Valado refers to her “habit of carrying a small sketchbook around [which] makes it easy for me to stop and draw or take notes,” she may owe a debt to her former teacher! The RBF houses an extraordinary collection of Beck’s pocket-sized sketchbooks, evidence of her continual practice of sketching whenever and where she went. These well-worn and heavily worked small pages attest to an infectious rigor carried out on all fronts. Beck bequeathed to her students a matchless mania for making, manifest in even the smallest gestures.💓
