CBSE Improvement Exam is conducted by CBSE to allows students to reappear in one or more subjects in succeeding year board examinations. Students appearing in CBSE Improvement Exam appear as private candidates in the main exam, that means they do not have to attend regular school for appearing in the improvement exam.

Students can appear for improvement exam for one or all of the passing subjects but not in the additional subjects and the subjects in which they are been declared fail. A candidate appearing for improvement exam in one or more subjects can not appear for additional subject simultaneously. Fees structure can be seen here.
Forms for the CBSE Improvement Exam are available from July or August till October and can be collected from Syndicate Banks or CBSE Regional office and you have to submit the form and fees at syndicate bank branches only, list of all branches in India can be checked here. See this post for bank challan and form images. Cost of the CBSE Improvement Exam form is Rs.10.

Some points to note about the CBSE Improvement Exam:

A candidate has to pass the Secondary School Examination of the Board in order to appear in the CBSE Improvement Examination. Students may appear in the failing subject (Sixth subject) at the Compartment Examination to be held in July/August the same year, then they can appear in the improvement examination next year (only if they pass in the compartment examination).
The candidate cannot pursue higher studies in the mean time.
Those reappearing in the whole examination, may appear as regular school candidates also.
For subjects involving practical exams, students shall appear only in theory and previous practical marks will be carried forward to their new marksheet. In case the candidate has failed in practical he/she have to appear in theory and practical both irrespective of the fact that he/she has already cleared the theory examination.
Compartment or supplementary examination is not conducted for CBSE Improvement Exam.
Candidates appearing in the CBSE Improvement are issued a new marksheet, reflecting the marks of the subjects they have appeared in the CBSE Improvement Exam only. New passing certificate is not issued since the previous year passing certificate is still valid.
